Garden Tour - Margaret and Tony Lazzari
"September, 2009 was our 20th year in our home, so I guess we can say that the gardens have evolved
slowly over those years. The original and still the theme for our garden has been to keep it as natural
as possible with an Adirondack, woodsy feel, leaning towards red-purple colors and keeping in mind that we
do have neighbors so the tacky look will not do. An elderly neighbor once told me "Your yard needs to work
for you". Hence, you'll see all the fruit shrubs, grapes, hanging vegetables as well as a compost heap.
We have tried to create garden rooms in different areas by using shrubs, natural rocks and benches found
in the trash and refurbished. These past couple of years, the gardens have been going through a major
transition to more natural plantings, different shrubs and many new trees. I am the "perennial person"
while my husband has recently gotten interested in roses, thus the new arbors and rose garden in the
front yard. Natural gardens are our passion; tall grasses, a fire pit surrounded by rocks and a bi-level
yard add to the atmosphere. My method is to pack the garden with plants to avoid weeding, keep a natural
free-forming view and leave the seed pods for the birds. The key word for a found and hauled garden is
"free", don't stress over what the neighbors want, and most of all, enjoy your garden."
