The Garden Lady - Old Thoughts 2007
Image of Bleeding Hearts

December 31, 2007 - Just one more entry...

We will be leaving soon for New Year's Eve, and I want to wish all of you the best in 2008.

We woke up to almost a foot of new snow this morning and more heavy snow is expected during the day tomorrow. I did get a few pictures locally and will put up a page sometime in the next couple of days. It's lovely! For now - stay safe, be blessed, and I look forward to a new year of sharing this little slice of life with you.

- the Gardenlady

December 30, 2007 - Out with the old...

I know tomorrow will be busy, and we are heading out for New Years Eve at the Dominican Retreat and Conference Center. We have been going there for many years and for us, it's just a wonderful way to start a fresh new year.

For all of you, I am posting a writing by one of my favorite authors - Joyce Rupp - entitled 'The Road of Life'.

Another year is coming to an end.
I can feel her tug at my calendar;
I can sense her insistant movement.
I can hear her call to cross over.

Outside my window the trees are empty
and the air has the ripeness of snowfall.
I cast an inward glance to the past
and feel a deep desire to catch its glow.

Something in me wants to hold on,
to gather all the good things close to me.
A part of me that yearns for security
keeps encouraging me to grasp it all.

Then a tiny thimble-full of light
moves its way through my insecurity;
it weaves a thread of courage,
sending sparks into the dark.
Up and up it rises through my spirit
until it meets my controlling grip.

The firefly flickers of God's grace
are enough to embrace the unknown.
A surge of powerful surrender
takes over all my looking back,
and ever so gently and hopefully
I risk the road of another new year.
............Taken from "May I Have This Dance?" 1992 by Joyce Rupp. Used with permission of Ave Maria Press.

May your New Year be blessed with health and happiness.

December 28, 2007 - Carol Night Pictures...

Little by little I am getting some more pages ready. The end of the year is always a busy time and this is no exception. So, more pages to come but for now, enjoy pictures from the Carol Night at DRCC.

You will notice also, I am moving my 2007 entries slowly off this page and into the 'archives'. This makes the page load faster and keeps only the more recent entries on the main page. 2007 is one year I will be pretty happy to see exit but it did have it's good points as well!

December 24, 2007 - Merry Christmas...

image
Work of Christmas Begins

When the song of the angels is stilled,
when the star in the sky is gone,
when the kings and princes are home,
when the shepherds are back with the flocks,
then the work of Christmas begins:
to find the lost,
to heal those broken in spirit,
to feed the hungry,
to release the oppressed,
to rebuild the nations,
to bring peace among all peoples,
to make a little music with the heart...
And to radiate the Light of Christ,
every day, in every way,
in all that we do and in all that we say.
Then the work of Christmas begins.

-- Howard Thurman, adapted

Merry Christmas, from the Gardenlady and family.

December 23, 2007 - Catching up - again...

It's a quiet Sunday afternoon, most of the Christmas prep is done and so I am trying to catch up on some work here. I mentioned earlier that I started working one day a week at the National Bottle Museum and finally I got some pictures selected and pages made. You can see them here. Next project is getting the pictures up from Carol Night at DRCC...stay tuned!

December 17, 2007 - Christmas Wishes...

The Pictoral Quote (see top bar) is our Christmas Greeting to all of you. Have a blessed, safe and happy holiday season and a great New Year!

December 16, 2007 - Winter Sunday...

We are midway through a winter storm - right now the snow has lulled and there is a fine freezing rain. Overnight, about 6 more inches of snow fell. Later on they say the snow will come in as part 2 of the nor'easter whirls back around. Perhaps we will get another inch or two out of that. The plows have been around but we are staying in until it passes. I have everything needed here so - no need to go out. It's a wonderfully free feeling to sit back in a warm house and catch up on small stuff.

Yesterday, I went out in the morning and met a new friend for coffee AND pie (hey - it's Christmas!) at a local country store. Getting acquainted and finding out how much we have in common. I did take a few pictures in the store, they are here. She and I plan to get together after the holidays and do some more exploring - oh, this should be fun!

December 13, 2007 - Winter Arrives...

The forecasters were FINALLY right. Snow started to fall around 11 and got right down to business.

Now at 6PM, the snow is still falling and we have had perhaps 4-5 inches. It just seems more like December when you look outdoors and see the branches outlined in white. The air is crisp and cold, and there is that quiet that comes with the snowfall.

These Winter nights against my window-pane
Nature with busy pencil draws designs
Of ferns and blossoms and fine spray of pines,
Oak-leaf and acorn and fantastic vines,
Which she will make when summer comes again--
Quaint arabesques in argent, flat and cold,
Like curious Chinese etchings.

- Thomas Bailey Aldrich

December 8, 2007 - New Adventures...

It was a fairly full week, the last night of teaching for a little while, getting Christmas cards in the envelopes and addressed and OUT, and oh, the best of all, a new place to explore over the next few weeks or months...

I started a very part time job this past week at the National Bottle Museum in Ballston Spa. It is quite an interesting place, and of course there is a LOT that I will have to take pictures of and post here. It wont be the usual 9-5 grind....mostly helping out with a few things (I am fairly good at organizing) one day a week. I can't wait to share some of the sights I see in there. Life seems to get more interesting all the time, doesn't it?

We have not had a lot of snow but the rivers and lakes are freezing over. Christmas lights are adding their festive touch to the night scenery and inside I am trying to remember the different things that need doing yet. I hope you are all well and safe, and getting ready for the 'long winters' nap'.

December 3, 2007 - The Little Storm That Couldn't...

That BIG storm that seems to be hitting quite a few people fizzled out around here. It seemed like we were in for about 4-6 inches anyway but ended up with icy slush - about one inch of it.

Otherwise, the bird feeders are busy and I'm starting to get my cards done. It's a great time for soups and stews, and a warm, cozy home. The lights on people's houses looks so pretty - I wish they would be on all winter. It's really a nice time of the year.

By the way - I got an email the other day from someone who used to live in this area and found the pages. A big welcome to you, and do drop back often! You folks are a good part of why I am still here!

December 1, 2007 - Last Month of the Year...

It is December already - and cold out tonight. Driving home about 9:30, it was 14 degrees.

We have a snowstorm predicted for tomorrow night into Monday but IF we get it remains to be seen. I am slowly getting some decorations up in the house and enjoying seeing the lights in other peoples homes. Tomorrow is "Holiday on the Avenue" which normally I would love to go to but this year I'm just waiting to get back to feeling normal so some of the picture taking has slowed down. You know though, its a GOOD time to get my cards done, and start making some gifts. A time of indoor warmth and light and that's not bad at all!

November 26, 2007 - A Cool and Damp Day...

Last night - overnight - we had some of the white stuff. Not a lot but enough that the grass was white.

Today, it is a very light rain and quite damp outdoors. It makes the house feel GOOD. We re arranged some furniture over the weekend and I do have to start thinking of Christmas decorating. I already have a place chosen for the creche - someplace where Mirage can't break any of the figurines. She's a good kitty but Christmas stuff gets a lot of her attention. Like eating trees. Sheesh!

November 25, 2007 - Post Thanksgiving...

image image image

That picture is of little Carley - isn't she a cutie in that hat? She was all dolled up for the holiday in a matching dress and teeny patent leather shoes. She is becoming 'Miss Baby' now and also has her first cold. Bummer.

We had a good holiday, dinner was wonderful and I did have a lot of help in the kitchen. This year, I took all the help I could get as - believe it or not - I am STILL recovering. I am thinking of changing the name of this page to the "MonoLogs" if I dont get better soon. Otherwise all is well, it is cold outside (15 overnight) and puddles are frozen. Winter is arriving after a pretty mild fall.

I hope your holiday was wonderful, now it is time to get ready for Christmas...yikes! Time to start decorating and get my Christmas Cards printed out and ready. Time will fly now!

November 20, 2007 - Almost Thanksgiving...

image image  image image image image

Shopping is finished, the guest of honor is defrosting in the fridge, the house is just about ready for Thanksgiving.

Outside, the weather is colder so the oven going will feel good. My thought for all of you this Thanksgiving is said best here:

For, after all, put it as we may to ourselves, we are all of us from birth to death guests at a table which we did not spread. The sun, the earth, love, friends, our very breath are parts of the banquet.... Shall we think of the day as a chance to come nearer to our Host, and to find out something of Him who has fed us so long? ~Rebecca Harding Davis

Have a great one!

November 16, 2007 - Back from Retreat...

I am back today from a few days at the Windmill for a retreat. Specifically, for some R&R, as I am still pretty draggy.

But, it was good to rest. I didn't get out for any photos (yikes) but I read from "In the Spirit of Happiness" by the Monks of New Skete and "A Naturalist Buys an Old Farm" bu Edwin Way Teale. I also did a lot more sleeping than I normally do and that was not such a bad thing! Finally some activity has slowed with the end of the centenial celebration and it is time to rest before the holidays.

I have a new quote up as well, see the top bar for the link.

November 12, 2007 - Celebrations and Pictures...

I have pages up (with links to full albums of pictures) of the 2 most recent events...

Parish Centennial Dinner Dance and

Volunteer Appreciation Night at DRCC

Enjoy!

November 9, 2007 - Coming Soon, again...

The latest pictures I am working on are from Volunteer Appreciation Night at DRCC.

I need to do a little work lightening a couple of them up - the lighting is dim in the room and flash carries only so far. But, we had a great time and those pictures should hopefully be done over the weekend. In other news, the colder weather is showing up. There are still a lot of leaves on the trees though. What a strange fall.

November 4, 2007 - A different kind of makeover

I put up a page of pictures from the two latest projects of the local Habitat for Humanity here.

Under each 'before' picture you will find a link to the complete set of pictures from the projects. The house at Georgetta Dix was a rehab of an existing structure and the Schenectady Street house required demolition of an unsafe burnout, and a new house was constructed. That house is still somewhat under construction but will be finished soon.

I can't say enough about this organization and the good they do...and there are many ways you can help. Contact your local chapter for details if you are interested.

October 29, 2007 - Frost on the Pumpkin...

image

Well, some of the plants bit the dust. This morning, a layer of white frost covered the grass and the leaves. My impatiens in the planter are history but the ones sheltered by the overhang are still alive. Fall moves deeper in, the leaves are falling off the trees at a rapid rate (although SOME trees are still green). It's the season for soups and stews, baking and steaming cups of coffee or tea.

It always seems to take me by surprise though. Even after all these years!

October 27, 2007 - Fall pictures and more

I've been working here getting pictures together and pages done. So far, Fall 2007 pictures are here.

Shortly I will also have a couple of pages with the latest Habitat homes that were dedicated last Sunday. Extreme Home makeover has nothing on these volunteers who better the lives of local people, one home at a time. From new construction to rehabs, the work is amazing and THOSE pictures should be up soon. Enjoy!

October 25, 2007 - New Quote.

It's been longer than usual but finally... pictoral quote is here. This can also be accessed any time via the top bar. The sumacs are lovely right now, and these were on the bike path behind the Community College. Enjoy!

October 24, 2007 - Some Pictures to Start....

I am working on more pages, but have some done from the weekend. Check out

More than Just Desserts and

Aunt Katie's Fall Open House. Enjoy!

October 23, 2007 - Whew...

This past weekend, there were 5 separate events I worked at or took pictures at. And soon I will have pictures up once I make the selections and write the pages.

Saturday morning was Aunt Katie's annual Open House for fall, Saturday night was our parish Ziti dinner (guess who scooped zitis?). On Sunday, we had TWO Habitat House dedications and in the evening, the "More than Just Desserts" fund raiser at the Retreat House. I definitely have some work ahead, and hope to get them up page by page! The weather was beautiful, and that was a plus!

October 19, 2007 - Pyramid Lake Fall pictures.

I finally picked the pictures for the weekend at Pyramid Lake! I wanted to have a good selection of people, places and the new rooms that our group had the distinction of being the first to use. So finally, pictures are here.

October 15, 2007 - Great weekend...

image

I will have a page up shortly on a trip to Pyramid Lake with a few FUN women.

This was the group that was supposed to go up in September but a mixup in plans had us up in the mountains this past weekend. I have to say, it was a "happy mistake" as the place was quiet, the colors were beautiful and we had a wonderful time hiking, eating, gabbing and relaxing. As soon as I select from among the many pictures I took, I will have a page (or two) up and the link here.

October 12, 2007 - 100th Anniversary Pictures

On Sunday, our Parish celebrated it's 100th Anniversary Mass celebration and Open House. It was a great gathering as we bring our year-long celebration to a close next month. For all who have waited patiently, pictures are here.

October 7, 2007 - Special People...

Yes, there are two entries today! I wanted to take a moment to add a small tribute to a lady that touched many lives. I do not give last names here for obvious reasons, but anyone from the area will know who I am talking about.

I went to a Memorial Mass last week for a member of our Parish community who died suddenly, from a stroke. Judy was one who fought and triumphed in many obstacles in life. She was stricken with polio when she was in her mid-teens, an active time in a young life, and spent a year in an iron lung. The polio left her in a wheelchair but that didn't stop her from leading a full and active life. She was the mother of 4 sons, she was "Ellis Hospital" to anyone who went there. She worked for almost 30 years at the information desk and her ready smile, strong faith and words of encouragement were known to all. She didn't spout platitudes, she didn't pull punches, she was simply an inspiration. One you listened to. Although I did not know her as well as many did I DO know I will miss seeing her every week.

Some people are unforgettable. She is one of them. Rest in peace, Judy. I hope I can be half the woman you were.

October 7, 2007 - Another busy weekend...

Well, Sunday was, anyway. Our Parish celebrated the 100th Anniversary Mass in the morning (pictures coming soon) and I had my Autumn Reflections Presentation at DRCC in the afternoon. Both went well, I am happy to report. And I am one tired lady today!

October 3, 2007 - Quotes and a bit of fun...

The new Pictoral Quote is up (see top bar), and I chose a little wisdom from Dr. Seuss. I have a few of his "sayings" and I love them all. Also, for a bit of humor....in one of my emails this morning (I subscribe to Smart Computing and it's daily emails) there was a link that I just have to share. When you've shopped for everything else - why not drop in at Just Toilet Paper.com You might find that perfect gift for that hard-to-please person. Sorry to say though, the Bush-Kerry line is sold out. I do remember having the Ho-Ho-Ho toilet paper in MY bathroom years ago.

October 1, 2007 - Autumn Days...

image

The days this past weekend were perfect for outdoor activity. So, on Sunday I put my camera in the car and headed north once again to get a few more pictures. The color has not peaked in the areas I visited but that doesnt matter - it was a great day just to enjoy the views.

I was out for about 5 hours, drove about 200 miles total and was tired but happy when I got back home. This time of the year is so bright and beautiful that even rainy days glow. The picture you see above was taken from a rest area on I-87, of Lake George with the Adirondacks (lower) surrounding. What a view!

September 27, 2007 - The Mill Stone

It is a rainy night and the thunderstorms that may have finally broken our hot and humid weather have passed. I still have electricity (hooray) so I thought I would begin the pages for the Mill Stone Speakeasy.

The good thing about being "non commercial" per se is that I can hype any place I like, and this is one of them. They don't have a web page, so you can find out all about them here. Enjoy, and come back as the information page is updated. In the meantime, pictures are here.

September 25, 2007 - Sunday Drive

I did get pictures up of our drive into the Adirondack Mountains on Sunday.

I am hoping to have the pictures of the Mill Stone ready soon for you as well. For now, enjoy some fall scenery, pictures are here.

September 24, 2007 - Before I forget...

Just a quick note, a new quote is finally up at the Pictoral Quote page - link on the top bar.

September 24, 2007 - Happy Autumn!...

A very happy Autumn to all of you! Yesterday, we had a great day, starting with brunch with our friends at the Mill Stone Speakeasy in Burnt Hills. They have started serving a Sunday Brunch that I hope catches on. I will have a page here at Gardenlady so people looking for it might find some information and pictures.

We then drove up north and headed west through the central Adirondacks, through North Creek, Indian Lake, down to Speculator and back home. The colors are turning up north. it is not peak yet but getting there. I will also have pictures of that trip as well, soon!

September 21, 2007 - Retreat Pictures

It has been a very busy week but I finally got the pictures up of the retreat in Glasco, NY.

I apologize for taking so long but I have really been drained most of the time, still trying to recover! And it was a terribly busy week with obligations I had to meet. But it is finally time to slow down for a couple of days and catch up where I fell behind. Come on along and enjoy the tour, pictures from Corazon are here. Enjoy it's beauty!

September 19, 2007 - Darn...

Just a quick note. You may have noticed the "Sparky for Mayor" link on my sidebar. Truly this was becoming a fun item around town. But I read in this morning's paper that Sparkey the Cat died of kidney failure. I'll miss seeing him when I stop by the shop. He was a sweet kitty.

September 17, 2007 - Back Home Again
image

I just got back from spending a long weekend at a hermitage in Glasco at Corazon at Villa St. Dominic run by the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill.

I discovered the hermitages when we went in July for Sr. Anne's 25th Jubilee. When plans fell through for Pyramid Lake I remembered Corazon and called to see if there was an opening. And, there was! I will get a page up as soon as I get everything all together. But it is a beautiful place along the Hudson River, about 70 miles SOUTH of me. I wish to thank the Sisters for their gracious hospitality and for providing such a beautiful place. I am still a long way from feeling back to normal but the place was a quiet haven where I did get some rest, hiked a little, took pictures, journalled and worked on my presentation.

The picture above is taken from the hermitage overlooking the Hudson River. More to come...

September 13, 2007 - Head for...what?

Oh my, there was a mix-up and there was no room for our group at Pyramid Lake so I am looking into a different place to head off to. Still Point is also booked - it is a busy weekend for retreats it seems. We shall see where I end up!

I am now getting into a retreat frame of mind so I am checking what else is available. We shall see. I probably could use a quiet reflective time anyway. I can get my Oct. 7 presentation in final form and get some (more) rest. I seem to need a lot of that lately, LOL!

September 13, 2007 - Head for the hills...

...or rather, the mountains. I am looking forward to a weekend with a bunch of great women on a "free-form" weekend at Pyramid Lake.

I will be sure to have the camera and wonder if we will see any color up north. There are no "plans" and we are all bringing something toward the meals. I even finally bought a sleeping bag since it is supposed to go down to mid-30's. Oh, I am looking forward to it!

September 11, 2007 - We Remember

Some words of encouragement:

" When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it. Always" -- Mahatma Ghandi

September 10, 2007 - Downtown!

I got some pictures ready of my quick morning trip into downtown Schenectady on the weekend of the Village Outdoor Art Show, the Greek and Italian festivals, and, Jay Street, the neatest street in the city! You can see the pictures here.

We finally had some much needed rain yesterday and today is much more comfortable. I also ask you to join me in remembering the events of September 11, 2001, and all those who died in the senseless acts of violence on that day and really, at any time. May we keep working to bring peace to our world. It's the only one we have.

September 8, 2007 - The Verdict is in.

To get the first things out of the way I heard from the doctor today and the 2nd round of bloods found the problem. Would you believe....Epstein-Barr (mono). I have no idea where I picked THAT up but it sure does explain why I am practically falling-over tired among other things. I'm not contagious and have not been for quite some time (I checked) so anyone who was around me doesnt have a problem.

The only thing left is an echo cardiogram to make sure there was no damage to the heart. Mainly because I pushed and didnt stop my usual running. Yep - I am one to push through just about anything, and I thought it was something that would pass. So, now we know what is going on. I have had it about 6 weeks anyway and have a little ways to go before I am back to (so called) normal! I did get out this morning and took just a few pictures of the set up for the Stockade Art Show. Also being held were the Greek Festival and the Italian festival but I didnt get to those. I visited a couple of shops on Jay Street, took some pics at the Habitat sites and I have a little work ahead to make picture pages. So...stay tuned! I may be slow, but I'm getting there!

September 4, 2007 - Testing, testing....

Some of my friends know that I have been a little off lately. Well, not THAT kind of off - LOL - but not up to par for awhile.

I've been getting a lot of blood work done and still waiting to nail down what is wrong. The tests show so far that there is something going on and I notice it especially trying to keep up with my usual activities but hopefully nothing too bad. So far Lyme disease and Congestive Heart Failure have been ruled out. There are a few other things we are looking at but wont know anything for a while more. Happily, I can still get out some and can keep the pages going so it's not all bad. Usually I dont divulge a lot of really personal info here but just in case I miss a few days, it's only tests or something like it. But I dont think I will miss too many entries *grin* I'm confident that all will be well! Oh, and there is a new pictoral quote up, check the top bar.

September 3, 2007 - The End of Summer

It really isn't, but Labor Day seems to be that that unofficial mark of passage between summer and early fall.

Tonight it is still and warm out after a perfect weekend for outdoor activities. I got out to Christman Sanctuary and Five Rivers this weekend and took a few pictures that I will pull into a page shortly. But tonight, I am totally tapped out and think I will just post this message to say hello to all of you. I hope your Labor Day weekend was spectacular!

August 28, 2007 - Pyramid Lake!
image

I worked my tail off the past 2 days because I wanted to get the pages up of the week at Pyramid. And so, you can see all of the Pyramid Lake pictures here. and a collection of random thoughts in a Pyramid diary here.

For those attendees who would like a high resolution picture, you can find them here - Celtic Retreat and Heaven and Nature Retreat.

August 26, 2007 - Back from the Mountains...

I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!

It seems time has flown, the trip and the retreats went very well and I met some fabulous people as well as catching up with my friends from last year. Right now, things are being put away, the laundry is getting done, the cat is in my face and all is well in the world. As soon as I sort through all the pictures and narrow down the field JUST a tad I will have some pages up especially for those who were with me for the week.

I also had the great pleasure of meeting a reader of this website...Renie from Tennesee. A lovely woman who stunned me with a parting gift of a quilt she had made. She didn't want me to go back to the room to look until she had left so I will say here - thank you, dear one, from the bottom of my heart. It is just beautiful and is now on the futon here in my "office". I will take a picture and post it as soon as I get a little more settled here. To those who were so positive about the presentations, I thank you as well. And of course, Sr. Monica, many thanks to you for ALL that you do for so many people.

To all the rest my readers and friends, I hope you are all safe and well!

August 17, 2007 - On My Way...

I probably wont be adding another entry now until I get back from retreat. Tomorrow I will be packing things up, and here around the house everything is just about in order before I go.

The weather calls for cool and some rain the last part of my time there so I will have to make sure that I have enough to keep warm. The conditions are rustic and the buildings are unheated. Some cabins have fireplaces but the place I usually like to stay does not. So, I have clothes for all sorts of weather, my materials are all in order and it's just finish work from here.

I have no internet access where I am going, not even a cell phone signal but I will have pictures and a page or two on my return. I did add a new pictoral quote and not so much a quote but what I emphasise during retreat. Until the 26th, be well and stay safe.

August 16, 2007 - Busy Bees...
image

I had read that there was a marked shortage of honeybees. Well, in my garden at least, things are buzzing and I am happy to see that. Here one is on my coneflowers.

I had noticed in the spring that the population seemed to be declining and hopefully the situation will change. Bees do so much good - I would miss their help AND their honey. And, you know, I have never been stung while working in the garden in the midst of them. It was only when I was trimming bushes and reached in and accidently grabbed one. Such important creatures in the grand scheme of things.

August 15, 2007 - More Babies!...
image  image

I got an email from my sister-in-law with pictures of her new grandchildren (and our new great-nephews). Meet Lucas and Shane, and their big brother Jamy! Pretty neat, dont you think? Congratulations to the parents and grandparents!

I am still working to get ready for retreat. Handouts are done, outline keeps changing, and I always have to be sure everything is done around here before I get busy with that! I will make notes to share when I get back but there are probably one or two more entries before that time.

August 13, 2007 - Coming soon...

It was a busy Sunday with my great niece Carley's Christening, and the annual open house at the retreat center 'Sundaes on Sunday'. I will get pages up sometime soon, especially with retreat coming up. Before I get wrapped up in that I will make sure these are done. Check back soon!

Pictures are up: Check out Carley's Christening. and Sundaes on Sunday.

August 11, 2007 - Time Out
image  image

Two weeks ago my friend Mar and I went to Christman Sanctuary for a couple of hours to take some pictures. it had been awhile since we took a 'photo safari' together, our lives are pretty busy. But this day we had a great time. She sent this picture she had taken right by the pools of the waterfalls and I took the one of her. It's a wonderful spot!

August 10, 2007 - Treasure
image

As I prepare my material and make my lists of things to remember for retreat I stopped and thought I would share one of my greatest treasures with you.

That's right...in that little and old box is a treasure. Bits and pieces of places and time. The box once contained 'Day Timers' - the popular management organizers. I didnt use Day Timers, my boss did...but I kept the handy little hinged box all these years. And now it houses the gifts of nature - little pebbles, shells, tiny pine cones, coral...all wonderful items to look at, to touch, and to reflect on. Lasting reminders of life that once was. But they are still beautiful, still treasures. And they all have a story.

Just like you. And me.

August 9, 2007 - Just HAD to try it

One of my blogging friends, another Claudia, has me going on some of these crazy tests. Well, here is one that I just had to try. They're right, I'm FAR from prissy LOL!

You Are Not Prissy
You're the furthest thing from a princess - and you probably stay far away from any princess types you know.
You have an easygoing approach to living. It doesn't take a lot to make you happy.
And when life requires it, you're ready to get your hand a little dirty.
There's no problem you're too prissy to tackle!

August 8, 2007 - Updated Quote

New Pictoral Quote is up...see top bar. And, the heat continues here in the Great Northeast. It's ALMOST enough to make me wish we had a pool. But not quite.

August 7, 2007 - More Garden Pictures

I just put up some new pictures for my Garden 2007 page. So now there is a page 2 with the garden in full bloom and that second page can be seen here.

In other news, Mirage is doing much better and slowly getting back to her old self. So I have been able to concentrate a little bit better and get some things done. Tonight it is very overcast and rain is due which will be great for the plants outside. Inside I am busy getting my materials organized for the "Heaven and Nature" retreat, plus my work assisting in the Celtic Spirituality retreat at Pyramid Lake that is coming up. It is a busy time, and a fruitful one.

August 5, 2007 - Latest News

It is like one step forward, 2 steps back in the cat story.

It is taking awhile to get everything sorted out but so far (fingers crossed) after a little spell this morning it seemed she did better. We went out and bought a can of white tuna in water and I have been feeding her just the smallest amounts at a time. And, she was eating it. Tonight, she's a little listless again though. I am hoping it will work out.

Otherwise, it was a sunny and warm day and later on I got outside and did some weeding. We are due for rain the next few days so that should take care of the watering. I will get some new pictures to add to my garden 2007 page. Everything is in full bloom at the present time. I also need to get back to my retreat work, time is closing in fast.

August 2, 2007 - The Update
image

Well, our kitty had a vet stay much to her great dismay. Ours too, actually. But here she is, back home and in one of her favorite places - my desk. The Editor for Garden Lady is back on the job, sorta.

I was glad we got her in though, She had lost another pound since the last visit 2 weeks before, and was down to 5.5 lbs from 7.5. Now, that is alarming. They did tests, took x-rays...nothing there. So we are trying her on meds for irritable bowel. Just like people get. I know I had checked everything I could think of right down to gradually switching her food. And she is excellent there...dry food only, doesnt like people food or cat treats. She is not an outdoor cat so that rules out the outdoor threats. Nothing unusual looked chewed in here...yet she kept getting sick. So, off to the vet we went, again.

I am keeping my fingers crossed and stuffing in those meds. I would like to thank one of my readers for the kind email sending her best wishes. That was such a thoughtful thing to do and I appreciate it a LOT! I hope you got my reply :)

July 31, 2007 -Mirage.

I had to bring my kitty to the vet today - She went 2 weeks ago and had some meds but the course finished last week and she started acting poorly yesterday. So, they are keeping her to try and see what's wrong. Boy, you get so attached to pets :(

You can see her pictures here.

July 30, 2007 - Little Sweetie!
image

This morning, hubby came in from the sunroom and said "Come look - our rabbits were busy!" And out in the yard, a tiny little bunny! I shot this not-so-great picture out the window and from a distance - not wanting to scare the little creature. I waited until it was close to the sprayer so you can see how little it really is. I would say it could easily sit in the palm of my hand. I hope nothing "gets" this sweet soul but in nature, you never know.

The garden is just beautiful right now, and the Rose of Sharon is blooming. I will update my garden page soon. This weekend was great in that I got a lot done and now I have to finalize the outline for my retreat. Time passes quickly. By the way, the new Pictoral Quote is up!

July 29, 2007 -A Birthday Celebration....

We had a quick surprise party for one of the coffeehouse regulars - Brett. He thought he could get away with no one knowing it was his birthday but it didn't work. Come on along and have some cake, pictures are here.

July 28, 2007 -Catching up and more....

I got a bright idea to consolidate some of my pictures' pages for a particular spot under one main page. WELL...

...it took me quite awhile. But, I do have one main page with links to all pages for Still Point finished. Whew. That page is here. and I also got a link on that page for my retreat last October, plus a Journal entry as well. You'll be able to find those on the new page.

For now, I am going to go do something else for awhile! I also took out the ThinkExist link since it hasn't changed in 3 days. Sigh.

July 26, 2007 -Surprises.

I walked out to the yard tonight as it was beginning to get dark and I saw quite a surprise. Fireflies. They are not unusual in June and up to mid July but this seems kind of late, at least to me. It just goes to show that life is full of surprises.

Today, I brought quite a few of my matted pictures over to the Katbird Shop , where some of my notecards are on sale. Kathy took all that I had to display, and that was another delightful surprise. Now, if they will sell! I also brought some cards out to a shop in Clifton Park and I am hoping they will catch on there as well. The business takes a lot of work but if it takes off, it will all be worth it. Here's hoping...

Speaking of the Shop, Kathys Cat Sparky is a contender in the Mayoral Race in Schenectady *smiles* Check out the fun page at sparkyformayor.com . Pure fun!

July 24, 2007 -Always Something New.

Aside from a new quote - finally (see top bar) I have also added a link at the bottom of the page to the Quote of the Day from ThinkExist.

I also had the pleasure of meeting up with someone from my past who is now a friend! It is wonderful to be able to speak and learn from him as a friend because the relationship 20 years ago was purely professional. We have had some wonderful parallel journeys and there is a lot to look forward to. He also is now a Reiki Master and I had a complete Reiki session. Previously I have only had a quick sample session at a wellness day I attended 2 years ago. It is an interesting experience and I may just schedule one every few months or so. If you like that sort of thing and have the opportunity to do so, I recommend it!

July 22, 2007 - Back to Still Point...again!
image

Today was a "day off" so I went out to Still Point (see sidebar for link) for awhile to regroup and clear my mind. The sun was shining, the bees and butterflies were out on the plentiful flowers, and I was able to spend a little time writing in one of the vacant areas. It is nice and quiet there, it was good to see Srs. Rowena and Nicole again and I have to plan a fall retreat in the hermitage! I will have more pictures up soon.

July 20, 2007 -Interesting and fun things.

Today when looking through the news homepage my eye was caught by an article on a woman who lives in a very tiny (and mobile) home behind a friend's house. The article stated that she built it herself from salvaged materials.

If you know me you know that I am particularly enchanted by small structures. If I were alone I would most likely live in a much smaller place (although my house is NOT big). One page you can find some of these homes is Tiny Homes or you can order plans from Tumbleweed Homes. And thats just a start. Now, I am NOT advertising the homes, just pointing out some interesting things! One version of the original story can be found here, The original story on Yahoo just this morning cant be found.

July 17, 2007 -How does your garden grow?
image

I was talking with my friend in England, and was telling him about the size of my Joe-Pye-Weed in the back of the garden. Some of them are 7'+ tall. I started out about 3 years ago with 3 plants and I have quite a few now. To show the size of the plants, hubby took this picture. They are to the right of me, and to give you an idea, I am 5'8" tall or thereabouts. A bigger picture can be seen here

I guess I can see why my neighbors put up the stockade fence!

July 13, 2007 -My Own Garden Pictures....

Finally got some pictures of my own garden, and created a page. It is getting like a jungle out there and there are a lot of buds ready to open within the next 2 weeks. I just love this time of year and the view out my windows! Garden 2007 pictures are here. Enjoy!

July 10, 2007 -Heat Wave....

Hot and muggy - the weather that seems to be gripping much of the US. Here, that has meant sudden thunderstorms at times.

Last night when I came out of school there had been a pretty good storm. Parts of the parking lot were somewhat flooded but thankfully not where my car was parked. I got there before the storm hit (I get there early to set up) and sat, and sat, and sat. No one showed up for the class which means there are people out there with more sense than me! And, that same morning, we had a storm roll in around 6:15 AM. I will take the rain - at least we dont have the tinderbox conditions that the west coast is experiencing. Ahhhh, summer!

Thursday should be nicer, and I will be heading up to Pyramid Lake for the day. Must remember a hat - the deerflies are hungry.

July 8, 2007 -Closing in on peak....
image image image

It is a warm and muggy day today, with the ever-present threat of thunder storms. I did go out and feed the garden this afternoon with my feeder that attaches to the hose. The flowers are nearing opening. Perhaps in a week or so it shold be stunning! I will get some pictures together for a garden page so check back!

In other news, I got a call from Pyramid Lake on Friday and I will be leading the afternoon sessions at the Nature Retreat as well as my own weekend afterwards. I am really excited about that. I put out a couple of "feelers" with a couple of other people as well, we will see how things go. So, time to get a little busier :)

July 7, 2007 -Updates and a wonderful day....

I realized that I have not updated how my friend in England is doing after his heart transplant. Well - the news is no less than extraordinary! He is still in hospital but 2 weeks after the surgery he is like a new man! I hear daily from his son, who relays the information that I pass onto the group. And, we hear he is keeping Mary on her toes!

Who says miracles don't happen?

Today is sunny, warm and breezy and I took advantage of the day to clean the sun room windows. For such a little house, we have more darned windows than you would believe! But now our view out to the garden is without spots. Until the next rain! It is an excellent day.

July 4, 2007 -Happy 4th and - more pictures....

It is raining out today and luckily we had no plans made. Hubby is watching old movies and I decided to catch up on the weekend pictures. In chronological order they are:

Pat's Retirement Gathering
Sr. Anne's Jubilee
Still Point summer

Enjoy!

July 3, 2007 - No lack of pictures....

I will be putting some new pictures up sometime soon. After the picnic on Sunday, we went to an Anniversary Jubilee on Monday for a friend who has been a Dominican Sister for 25 years. Not only that, but she has spent the past 15 months as a missionary in Pakistan. If you follow Gardenlady, you will remember the Mass in which she was "sent out" and the pages can still be seen by accessing the Picture Index. That happy event was at Villa St. Dominic, run by the Sparkill Sisters and in the Catskill Mountain foothills, along the Hudson River. Beautiful place and *grinning* they have hermitages available for retreats.

Today, I had a quiet day ahead so I went up to Still Point Interfaith Retreat Center where it was good to catch up with Sr. Nicole and Sr. Rowena. I realized I have been there in every sesason BUT summer and I took advantage to get some pictures to add to my collection. Still Point is one of the places I go to get away from the rush and get my thoughts in order. Anyway, I DO have more pictures of both events plus I will be seeing my little great niece Carley tonight (yes, more pictures) and I have a few pages to get together and upload.

In the meantime, happy, healthy and SAFE 4th of July to all of you! And a happy birthday to Gardenlady - 4 years old tomorrow.

July 1, 2007 -Picnic Pictures....

Habitat picnic pictures are here.. enjoy!

July 1, 2007 -Fireworks and Picnics....

We will be going out very shortly to a picnic for the Habitat workers and neighborhood residents, a chance to kick back and relax and spend some time with all those good folks who make such a difference in our area (hubby included).

We also went to the fireworks Friday night - a wonderful display in our little village that attracts thousands of people every year. One of the shots is the picture for my Quote of the Week (link on top bar) and even if you didn't like Ronald Reagan I felt one of his quotes was perfect. So, I used it :)

June 29, 2007 -Nearing the 4th of July....

Not only our nation's birthday, but an anniversary for Gardenlady - 4 years old.

Hubby and I will be heading to the park to see the fireworks later. The past couple of years bad weather postponed the shows but today is clear, breezy, cooler and perfect. I will try out the "fireworks" setting on my camera and maybe also set it to burst pictures and see how they come out.

I worked in the yard today and cleared some overgrowth, planted 2 new perennials (hey - they called my name for heaven's sake). So the yard is looking pretty good. And the wrist is doing pretty well but then again, I dont baby it either! I also remembered my sister - it is 10 years ago today that she died, on a day much like this one. I know she is in a much better place.

Have a good weekend if I dont write before.

June 27, 2007 -Still hot....

image

The heat continues but is supposed to break with storms later on. In this garden picture, you can see one of my baby starlings standing in the fresh water in the bird bath. The bath and the fountain are very active as all the creatures work to cool down. Times like this, I am happy to have the company. I just hope the storms dont batter the plants too badly, but the threat is always there in summer.

I haven't heard any news yet from England but I do imagine my friend is still being evaluated. Transplants are amazing things but they do come with their own set of problems as I well know. Mostly it's now a waiting game. But, we are all hopeful.

This just in - I got an email from his son, and he is awake and driving the staff crazy! That's a VERY GOOD sign! He should be sitting up tomorrow according to the email and Karl said he would email tomorrow and give another update.

June 25, 2007 -Heat wave....

image

Here are a couple of my feathered friends. Shortly after taking this picture I went out and added clean water - with the hot weather we have had, the water evaporates or gets splashed out almost as fast as I can put it in. I got a bit of garden cleaning done, pulled out all the blocks on the path and weeded and relined to keep future weeds down.

Tonight after a nice cool shower the cat helps me type before bed. I am looking forward to news about my friend, he should be waking up soon. I wish I were closer to go and visit but I am sure visitors are a ways off yet. So, we hang tight until we get the next email!

New Quote of the Week is up as well. Enjoy!

June 24, 2007 -A morning request....

I got an email this morning from a friend in England who has been waiting for a heart transplant.

His beeper went off and as of 7AM EDT they were on their way from London to his small town to get him. He has had a time doing even the smallest things and the transplant is the only hope at this time. My prayer is that you will soon be better than ever, dear one! God hold you, and your family, in the palm of His hand.

UPDATE this morning - June 25, I got an email from his son telling me the operation went well and that they were keeping him under sedation for 24 hours. His wife noticed he had a pink color now, and all of us are keeping the vigil. But the signs are good that he made it this far!

June 23, 2007 -Home soon....

Has it been quiet lately? I'm on retreat, and will be heading home soon. Nothing structured, just time to gear down and also get my presentation together for August. I have dial-up access but when you are used to high speed, you figure you'll just wait to put up pictures. Text like this takes no time to transfer at all. See you soon, with more STUFF!

June 18, 2007 -Come on a tour....

I just couldn't wait...so I worked and got the pictures and pages of the Gardens and Gazebos Tour that was held on Saturday finished. How delightful to revisit these beautiful gardens once again as I put the pages together. My thanks to each gracious homeowner, and to the Soroptimists for allowing me to capture this event.

Enjoy the tour... pictures are here.. plus, new Quote of the Week up - see top bar for link!

June 16, 2007 -Success....

Today, the weather was perfect for the annual Soroptimist/Schenectady's Gardens and Gazebos Tour. Ten gardens are highlighted each year and they are nothing less than spectacular.

The only problem I had was actually an asset for the tour itself - bright sunshine which can make picture-taking a challenge because of the deep shadows that are cast in shady areas. BUT - I did manage to get my pictures with only one possible reshoot. This project will take me a little more time than usual (making the pages) and every garden will have it's own page just as in the past. So, stay tuned!

June 14, 2007 -Sneak Peek....

image

Started taking pictures of the gardens that will be on the Garden Tour on Saturday. (see sidebar) Interesting? Just wait, ALL the awesome gardens will be here in a couple of weeks. The weather is supposed to hold, today was lovely. Not too hot, some sun and puffy clouds. A perfect day! You will be amazed - as I always am - at the beautiful gardens that are highlighted. They show a lot of love and work!

June 12, 2007 -Updates....

I added a couple of new pieces to the Sanctuary page. Soon also, I will get some more quotes added in the quote link. I felt it might be nice to put up a few of the writings I find inspiring, and that I reflect on for forming my own work. Enjoy!

June 7, 2007 -Park Pictures and more....

Finally, a page is up with some of the attractions of a local city park.

I am pleased to be able to put up a page for a former city resident who (as I had written previously) found my pages. Enjoy.. Central Park pictures are here.

On another note, I'm looking forward to heading out in a few days FOR a couple of days - a private retreat where I can work on my upcoming presentations. Not that I cant work at home but you know - things like housework, meals, laundry seem to distract me! Getting away helps me focus so that's what I'll be doing. But not for a few days yet.

June 9, 2007 -I get emails....

I got an email just yesterday from a nice woman in Florida who found my website. Seems she lived right in this area and moved south years ago. In my reply to her, I asked if there was any place in particular that she would like to see and one place she mentioned is Central Park. I DO have a few pictures of the park and I'll have to put together a special page, that's for sure.

That is one reason that I love doing the web page - you meet the nicest people! So, hopefully in a few days I will have Central Park pictures up. Enjoy your weekend, wherever you may be.

June 7, 2007 -A Hike in the Woods....

Whenever things get too much for me to think about and life gets too busy, I head for the woods. John Burroughs puts it best: "I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order". There, you can just receive the God-given gifts of nature to help you unwind.

Today I went to Christman Sanctuary. Come on along with me... pictures are here.

June 4, 2007 -New links....

Above the diary, the last 2 links are now active (Sanctuary and Potpourri). Just some things I thought my readers might like!

PLUS - pictures of Aunt Katie's Flea Market and the Parish Picnic are up!

June 3, 2007 -Busy days and more....

image

This was a busy weekend with pictures coming soon of our Parish Picnic - held indoors due to thunderstorm threats, and Aunt Katies Flea Market. Hopefully the pictures will be up soon. In the meatime, a shot of the yard from the back. I made a panorama-type view of the yard itself. Things are growing!

June 1, 2007 - Pictures, pictures, pictures!...

Good as my word, I have A day with Sally pictures and historic marker dedication - Robert Allen pictures up.

You can read more about each great event on the pages themselves - enjoy!

Also, I want to thank my friend "Bell-ah" of Southern Somedays Blog
for the great link and write up about Gardenlady and our small corner of the world!

May 31, 2007 -Free at Last....

image image image

Need I say more? I have a lot of work to do yet, but look Ma...no cast!

I also went out to my friend Sally's house yesterday and got some more great photo ops, especially a family of ducks. Mom Duck, Dad Duck and NINE little ones! Pictures will be up soon.

image  May 27, 2007 - Anniversary....

It's our anniversary, and we celebrated with a nice dinner at a local restaurant, in the company of good friends. We're dressed in red because we had gone to the Vigil Mass for Pentecost. Our good friend Hilda had the Mass said for us and we all went out to dinner after. What a great day it was.

Today is the actual day (35 years) and we're spending it quietly at home. We did a little outside in the garden after brunch and we wont go too far as thunderstorms are due. Our neighbors in back put up a stockade fence - probably for their privacy and it also helps ours. It looks really nice, I do have to say. Sets off MY garden, which I assume doesnt look quite as good from their point of view and probably will help keep all my plants from creeping into their yard.

Another PS - 4 days until the cast comes off. Looked like a patriotic outfit however!

May 26, 2007 - Some Pictures and more...

I just finished putting up the Memorial Day parade pictures and the Habitat pictures up.

Tomorrow is our Anniversary, so I'm finishing up getting ready for dinner tonight. We are having a small party at one of the local restaurants and it should be a good time!

May 24, 2007 - Overload!

This has been a busy week with the dedication of a habitat house on Sunday (The REAL and local Extreme Makeover Home Edition) plus the village's Memorial Day Parade last night.

I should have pages up sometime in the near future. The dedication was wonderful as it always is and the parade...well, this little village really does it up right. Concluding with a Memorial Service it truly is an event for all. Members of our parish marched in it as part of our 100th Anniversary celebration and our good friend Hilda looked like royalty in the vintage car! Stay tuned for more pics, coming soon.

P.S. - one week from today, the cast comes off. I'm marking time!

May 22, 2007 - Telephone Blues....

After a few days of telephone woes and a lot of runaround from our phone company I finally blew at someone yesterday.

Yes - we still have a land line, mostly so I have an option if the cable goes out on my internet service. So, for the past few days, I had trouble on the line and then my neighbor came over and said she had tried to reach me for 2 days. To make a long story short, my wires are somehow crossed with another neighbor of mine. His phone doesnt ring at all, and HE'S been trying to get HIS problem fixed. So, a lineman is around now (after I totally blew at Well Known Phone Company and demanded to speak with a supervisor) correcting, I hope, the problem they were so unhelpful and snotty about.

Sometimes, you just have to be a PITA about things *sigh*.

May 20, 2007 - A Dandelion Reflection....image

This was a reflection I wrote for the retreat day, and people seemed to like it. So, here it is, for your enjoyment. If you would like to use it, please email me for the OK - thanks!

Love 'em or hate 'em...you have to admire the persistence of a dandelion.

Unashamed to pop up in the company of the most cultivated gardens or manicured lawns, the hardy dandelion is often overlooked, often cursed, the target of aggressive attempts to eradicate it.

Does this stop it? No........

This past winter, when we had the warm spell at the beginning of January I was coming down the hill from the windmill to the office after a private retreat and my eye was drawn to a spot of gold on the hill. Guess who? Blooming in all its dandelion glory - it didn't care if it was January. It was warm, the sun was shining, it was going to grow!

Since it only lasts a day or so anyway, I picked it and brought it with me - making sure it had some water so it might live out its short span. It was a wonderful focal point for reflection. Tying my own thoughts to this small miracle, blooming in January.

The dandelion, simply by being what it is, and not trying to be a rose, gives glory to God simply by being a dandelion. No pretense...it doesn't obsess over not being something it is not, but rejoices in the hardiness given to it. And - it's NOT fussy or "high maintenance" You don't need special dandelion food, or special dandelion soil. Any old place is fine. In the middle of your prize garden or springing from the cracks in the sidewalk, its needs are minimal. Whether YOU want it there or not - it doesn't get discouraged.

Every part of this amazing flower is edible and useful. Root, leaf, flower.

And, if it were not so common, perhaps we might value it more?

Lord, give me the soul of a dandelion - to bloom where I am planted without worrying about what others may think. Let me open my petals to Your sun and spread my seeds on Your wind...content to be one among millions yet individually unique. A bright beacon amid the most adverse conditions. A testimony to the fact that all of us are loved equally - irregardless of our earthly "state".

May 19, 2007 - Exhausted but Happy....

The retreat day today went along very well. I met a lot of terrific people and we had a wonderful day together despite some rain. This was the Photography, Drawing and Journaling retreat and the best part was hearing the ideas and seeing the work of this very special group.

Tonight, I am exhausted (for me, the day didnt end when the retreat did) but it is a great and rewarding tired. My humble thanks to the Dominican Sisters for all their help, prayers and support which made it possible. Now to prepare for the next one...

May 17, 2007 - Just for fun....

image

This picture was taken a couple of weeks ago - Sister Bernice and I were having a little fun with our respective injuries. Between us, we figured we made one whole workable person.

Sr. Bernice is one of the Sisters I work with at the Retreat House office, the same place where my Day of Retreat will be held this Saturday. I am just about ready, just have to make copies of some handouts and get my gear together (I travel with a LOT of STUFF for these presentations). I am looking forward to it and I DO love working with the wonderful people there.

To Srs. Sue, Barbara, Deborah, Bernice, Carol and Aimee, and to the others who work there (Barbara, Katie, Shawn, Carl and Bill) - thank you all for being part of my life, and for believing in me!

May 12, 2007 Spring Photos....

Quick note, I compiled some of my spring pictures from different places, you can see them here.

May 12, 2007 Meant to be ....

It is the end of another week, and I am putting some finishing touches on 2 short reflections I will be leading at Spring Enrichment in Albany this coming week. This was an unexpected request but then again, the whole business of leading retreats and presentations would not have been anything I thought I would be doing.

You see - I've always been the one who WENT on retreats and TO presentations. But obviously, there is another plan going on. And who am I to argue? So, there are 2 short presentations this week and my "Day of Retreat" on the 19th. That will be a 5 hour one, the longest thus far. Prep for the weekend I have coming up in about 3 months. Life is full of surprises.

In other news- 18 days until the cast comes off. Whoo Hoo!!!!!

May 8, 2007 - Ideas....

bee

I'm working on a new "Spring 2007" page with pictures from Pyramid Lake, Still Point and more. Plus you will notice the change on the top of main page - most links are not active yet but should be soon. The Picture Index link IS working, that was a simple matter. I hope you like the changes!

I also am kicking around the idea of putting a new page of favorite quotes - perhaps having a "Quote of the Week" using photos and a quote archive.

Stay tuned!

May 6, 2007 - Lovely weather....

Spring has really come in around the Great Northeast. We have had some lovely sunny weather and the leaves are all opening in the trees. I have slowly been getting my work done (and I mean slowly) but it's a great lesson in being more mindful of the task I am presently performing.

Housework has to be the biggest adjustment, i instinctively reach out with the bad hand to do things and I stop - readjust - and carry on. Hubby helps with things like the dishes or any heavier moving or lifting. And, of course, there is always 'work' work.

I am also preparing more presentations, it seems the idea is getting off the ground. How great to be able to take everything I love doing and bring it out to other people. I am one lucky lady :)

May 4, 2007 - Welcome, Carley...

image

Here is the newest celebrity in the family, little Carley Margaret makes her debut at 8lbs 8 oz, and 19-1/2 inches. It has been 15 years since there was a new baby on my side of the family and I mamaged to hold the little one for awhile. The proud and weary parents are home tonight and life will be different for sure.

As I held her tonight I wondered, what great things will she accomplish? What talents and skills are within that tiny body? Time will tell but for now, how dear the scent of this little miracle. By the way - happy Anniversary today to her Mommy and Daddy.

May 2, 2007 - Life in General....

It is the beginning of May, and normally I am on retreat at this time. This year, due to varying circumstances I am not.

There is enough to be done here - that's for sure but boy am I feeling out of sync. It's probably a good idea to concentrate on my upcoming presentation in mid-month but I'm easily distracted here. Working around the cast has been an issue but I'm becoming a proficient lefty. Now to get my mind in gear.

April 30, 2007 - Garden Tour time....

On the sidebar, above the Garden Tour graphic is a link to a page with information on the 2007 Soroptimist Gardens and Gazebos Tour which will be held on Saturday June 16, 2007 from 10-4. It's a wonderful way to spend the day and a great opportunity to see some of the area's loveliest gardens.

Hope to see you there! I will be the one with the camera. *grin*

April 28, 2007 - As Promised....

I just finished putting up new pages: -

Magic Wings trip pictures are here..
Historic Deerfield pictures are here..

April 28, 2007 - Keeping up, S-L-O-W-L-Y....

Would you believe my friend and I went to Magic Wings the other day and I still managed to get some decent pictures - cast and all. I took the lumix which is light and just realized that the fast action shots are out for now. They came out surprisingly good all things considered.

We also made a side trip into Greenfield, and then historic Deerfield. Now there is a place worth going back to see! I took a few shots there as well and I WILL get a page up of both Magic Wings and Deerfield. It just takes me longer to get everything resized and the page done because it is tiring on the wrist. But, it's only been a week. And I have 4 or 5 more weeks to go like this.

The pain is much better though *smile*.

April 23, 2007 - Living in a one-handed world....

Here's the straight dope, you can get used to almost anything. One way or another. And after having my moment of extreme frustration last night I am beginning to learn things and form opinions on adapting to inconvenience. So, let's look at the funny side of having your 'alpha' arm in a cast and hopefully I will add to the list as time goes by.

1. Some things you do just take longer. Get used to it.

2. There is no such thing right now as a quick shower.

3. Pantyhose - we wont even discuss that. You would LOVE the video.

4. Your fork or spoon may not end up where you think.

5. Bathroom breaks are a hassle.

6. Everyone either wonders who you hit, or who hit YOU.

7. There is no such thing as a flesh-colored cast. No place to hide.

8. It always itches. And you cant reach it.

I could go on, but you get the idea. I am sure things will be much easier once the pain goes away, but there is humor in it if you look, and you can do a whole lot more than you think you can. You also find out what you CANT do. For me, getting used to asking for help here and there is the tough part. But I find loads of wonderful people who are there for you. And, I'm still taking pictures!

imageApril 19, 2007 - ARRRRRRRRGGHHHHH....

I broke my wrist today. Sheesh! Now it is time to see how resourceful I can be. I did get some nice pictures before the incident however and even a couple after. I'll post them later though. Right now it is time to take some excedrin!

April 22 update - everything takes me a LOT longer to do! Not only the limited mobility of the arm but the pain is a factor to contend with. I hope to get some pictures resized and a page done sometime soon, I am sure of a video of some of my clumsy work right now would be hilarious! One nice thing though - the weather has been glorious. I even did some left handed garden cleaning today!

April 17, 2007 - A Birthday Toast

image

Just a picture from dinner last night, we did go to one of the nicest steak houses around and had a wonderful dinner. Thus begins another year...a sort of "New Year" mark. Thanks to all of my friends for so many thoughtful cards and gifts. I really appreciated them {{{{{hugs}}}}}

April 16, 2007 - Sigh...

A little 'out of the mold' entry for today, which happens to be my birthday. Unfortunately I'll remember more the killings at Virginia Tech today, and the Nor'easter which is wreaking havoc around here in the form of flooded roads, accidents, right down to water in my basement. And the rain shows no sign of stopping at the present time.

Through it all we need to sit back for a moment and take stock - and keep the families of the students and those affected severely by weather and war in our thoughts and prayers. Then do whatever we can to help in whatever way we can. The world could use a whole lot of that right now. You with me?

April 14, 2007 - A Very Special Early Birthday!...

I went over to the coffee house tonight, like I always do on Friday, and I was running just a little late. When I got there I was surprised to see so many people there already but even MORE surprised to find it was a birthday celebration for Rob (another regular) and....me! A lot of my friends, both my nephews and my niece were there, but it still took me a couple of minutes to realize what was going on. Duhhhhhh.

Isnt it funny how sometimes when you wonder if you make ANY difference at all, (and we all have those times) something like tonight comes along and makes you feel that yes, maybe you DO. Thanks, my friends - you are all the very best!

April 9, 2007 - Happy Anniversary Katie!...

On Saturday, Aunt Katie's Attic celebrated their 12th Anniversary and of course, I got over to get some Anniversary Party pictures. Everyone had a great time, check it out! Congratulations, Katie!

Pictures are here..

April 7, 2007 - So Thoughtful!

image

Today when the mail came, there was a card from my friends in England. Although my birthday is still a little over a week away, they MADE this gorgeous card, the prettiest handmade card I have EVER seen. The picture simply doesn't do it justice. Chris even nabbed one of my pictures of Mirage (asking me first) since he knows how much I love that cat. The card is lovelier than anything you could get in the stores and means the world to me!

Thank you, Chris and Mary, from the bottom of my heart. I love it!!!!!

April 4, 2007 - Almost Easter...

image

We have a couple of busy nights coming up so I thought I would get my Easter greeting out to all of you! May your Easter, or Passover, or whatever holiday you may be observing be filled with blessings.

In other news, I'm recovering from an abscessed tooth so tonight I'm feeling the effects of a pretty darned strong pain killer. Even the fact that we had some wet snow doesn't bother me presently! I do think I will head to bed though - I doubt I will have any trouble sleeping THIS night. I am halfway there already anyhow. Take care!

April 1, 2007 - Small Escapes...

After breakfast today it was such a lovely day I decided to go out and take some pictures. So, I asked hubby if he wanted to go along. The conversation went something like this:

Me: Want to come on along while I get some pictures?
Him: Where are you going?
Me: I don't know
Him: Do you think you will be back by 3:30?
Me: I dont know.
Him: Well, do you think you'll be back by tonight?
Me: Probably.
Him: OK

We went out to Moreau Lake State Park, where the ice was still on the lake but it was a nice day. It turned cloudy and then a few sprinkles on the way home.

Pictures are here...the first few are at Moreau and the last 3 were from Christman Sanctuary. Spring is slowly getting here!

March 30, 2007 - A Busy Life...

A week has gone by, most of our snow is melted, and I got a good jump on spring cleaning.

There is nothing as satisfying as spring cleaning - even if you dust and vacuum regularly things are just so much fresher after being washed and scrubbed. I believe this house has more windows than a greenhouse when it comes to window washing. But little by little inside work gets done and when the weather warms more, the outside work begins. My spring flowers are starting to poke out of the ground and before we know it - well, this little writing by Lilja Rogers says it best:

First a howling blizzard woke us
Then the rain came down to soak us
And now before the eye can focus -
Crocus

March 24, 2007 - A pleasant surprise...

image

Coming back from the Home and Garden Show at HVCC yesterday we saw this red-tailed hawk fly up from the brush and perch on a light pole near a busy intersection. My friend Pat pulled over a couple of times and I was able to get a couple of long shots and crop them. To me, this was more exciting than passing by the site for Extreme Makeover Home Edition, which was also on the way home. I am not a television watcher so all I know of the whole to-do is that it is a great concept and really, much like what hubby and many others do in Habitat for Humanity (only without all the fanfare).

Later that evening after an event at the Church, I went down to the coffeehouse and met the lady friend of one of our regulars. She is up visiting from Mexico City and she's a lovely person! Oh, and she reads "Gardenlady" so that is another plus *grin*. I will have to add their picture in the coffee house pages, soon as I get a few more things done here.

March 21, 2007 - Spring tiptoes in...

image

Today we had some sun, we had some rain, and it is acting very much like March outdoors.

I got out for a little while today and hiked in the snow in the woods. The snow is pretty well packed now so it supports your weight much better. I just prefer walking in the woods to pounding the asphalt in town. Lstening to the chickadees I stopped and took a few pictures. On the way home, I saw something ahead in the road so I slowed down. Was it a mirage - the ones that look like something is there when nothing is there? No - it was a deer, taking a drink from a puddle in the road. I slowed down and stopped, as did a girl in an SUV coming in the other direction. The deer took it's time, and walked off the road and into the woods. What a treat!

March 19, 2007 - Girl's Night Out...

image

Last week was Girl's Night Out at Aunt Katie's Attic (see sidebar for webpage) and as always everyone had a great time! Pictures are here!

March 17, 2007 - The Wearin' of the...White?

 image
The predicted storm did not disappoint us - we got a little over a foot of snow. This is based on an average of measurements in our yard. Today everyone is outside digging out and the one wonderful thing is always how neighbors help neighbors at least in my neighborhood. I took a couple of pictures and was going to go out and take more. However it doesnt look any different than the snow we had before. So, I put up this one picture 'just because'.

March 16, 2007 - Happy St. Patrick's Day!

image image image image image image image image image image

As we here await yet another snowstorm, we send out warm wishes to you and yours.

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

March 14, 2007 - The Eye of God

Eye of God image
This morning, the sun rose with striking color and shortly later I looked up to see - and catch - this picture of the sun in the sky. Less than a minute later, it was gone.

It looked to me like the eye of God, and the moment was nothing less than spectacular.

March 12, 2007 - Spring Cleaning and Baby Showers...

It is almost mid-March, and a great time for some spring cleaning inside and out - getting rid of the garbage that clogs your life. There is something satisfying when you open the garbage can and dump the accumulated junk and greet a fresh season (well, it's ALMOST here) with an uncluttered house and mind.

It is also a great time to get ready to welcome a new baby, and I have a great-niece on the way and apparently twins due a little farther off! Baby Shower pictures are here.

March 5, 2007 - Sunday drive...

I got out for a few pictures on a typical March day - wind, flurries, sun, you name it. My friend Sally went with me and we went to the Vischer's Ferry Nature Preserve. The best part was a stop on the way home at Riverview Orchards.

I am working on getting picture pages up for both trips, check back soon. Do check out Riverview Orchards' webpage in the meantime, though.

Update! Store Pictures are here.
Nature Preserve pictures are here.

March 2, 2007 - Worth Sharing...

This came in an email - I dont know who wrote it, but it is worth sharing.

A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got talking at a reunion and decided to go visit their old university professor, now retired. During their visit conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in their work and lives.

Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups - porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite - telling them to help themselves to the coffee.

When all the alumni had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said, "I notice that all the nice looking, expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups... and then you began eyeing each other's cups."

Now consider this: Life is the coffee; your job, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life. The type of cup one has does not define, nor change the quality of Life a person lives. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee God has provided us.

The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything." God brews the coffee, not the cups...Enjoy your coffee! Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Spend time with God over your coffee.

February 28, 2007 - Fulfilling the Vision...

I have been busy working for a year and a half on presentations using my photos, quotes, music, prayer, etc. For those of you who know me it was not anything I expected to be doing back in August of 2005 when the inspiration came after a private retreat at PLC. I was priviledged to be able to present during the established Nature Retreat at Pyramid Life Center (see sidebar for link) last year, and this year I have had 2 presentations at DRCC (also on sidebar) with more coming. It's a blessing to be able to share the beauty around us with other people. I am really looking forward to this ongoing journey.

February 27, 2007 - Ch-ch-changes...

Tonight I went to transfer some of my old entries into the "old thoughts" page and I noticed that things are becoming a little *ahem* unwieldy. So, I redid the page, and separated the entries into years. Gardenlady has 3.5 years worth of entries and it seemed like an organizational thing to do. SO - for better or worse that's the story!

February 25, 2007 - Happy Birthday...

Friday night, the regulars at the Village Coffee House had a surprise birthday party for Denise. With a great assortment of food, music by Mark and Pete (and Dave and Joe), and extra jokes added in it was a great night honoring a great lady. Come on and take a look. Party pictures are here!

February 23, 2007 - Simply Spectacular...

snow scene
The snow finally did arrive overnight, and this morning everything looked like an enchanted land. Now the wind has come up and the snow is off of the trees. It was gorgeous while it lasted!

February 22, 2007 - More Snow Coming...

Perhaps there will not be a LOT of snow, but some more is coming and we're getting ready to head out for some pictures. The question is, where to go? Decisions, decisions....

Check back later and find out where!

Here is where we ended up

February 18, 2007 - Sunday Drive...

mountain
We took a drive today to see some snow, and so I could take a few pictures of our late-arriving snow.

A lovely trip heading west and then north, looping through the lower Adirondacks. People were out snowmobiling on the lakes and ice fishing, some out skiing - everyone taking advantage of the new snow and recent cold. The picture above was taken just past Piseco on Rt 10, it was wonderfully sparse traffic-wise. I only wish the winds had not blown so much of the snow off of the trees but this will do!

Pictures are here.

February 15, 2007 - Say it with...Snow?

Finally some pictures of the Valentine's Day snowstorm are ready. What a day it was - the snow fell throughout the day as fine, hard driving, accumulating snow. We had a funeral to attend in the morning, otherwise, we stayed home and worked on clearing snow at intervals through the day. Actually, a snow day is not all that bad a thing provided you are ready. And we were.

Bundle up - pictures are here.

February 14, 2007 - Something new to read...

One more thing in addition to the Valentine's Day news, I came across a book referenced in a daily email I subscribe to, and I checked out the author's webpage. To cut right to the chase, I ordered the book and I think the web page may be of interest to you. The book is titled "Small Graces: The Quiet Gifts of Everyday Life" and is written by Kent Nerburn whose webpage is here. From a quick glance at the topic, I felt it is very much along the lines of what my presentations are about. Actually, I saw a few books that look interesting.

Certainly worth a look!

February 14, 2007 - Valentine's Day...

Vday
It's been quite a Valentine's day - we have had perhaps 18 inches of snow and still snowing. I can only guess because the wind comes up and blows everything around. Winter really arrived today, and we are staying put, staying warm, and enjoying the show. I should have a picture page soon. For now, I am going to sip my coffee and enjoy my chocolates and my evening!

February 13, 2007 - Let it Snow...

A major Nor'easter is moving in tonight - up to now, we have not had any more than 2 inches of snow during any one time period. All that is about to change - stay tuned, there should be some snow pictures online in the next couple of days!

February 10, 2007 - The Night Before...

Tomorrow is my "Ice and Snow" presentation at the Dominican Retreat and Conference Center, and hopefully I have remembered everything I need. There is supposed to be a pretty good crowd for a Sunday afternoon and I am SO fortunate to not only be able to work with everything that is dear to me but also, to have people who believe in the presentation! The nice thing is - proceeds go to the Retreat House and that is a VERY important place to keep around as far as I am concerned.

Taking a deep breath...

February 6, 2007 - Winter Walk with Sally...

Yesterday I got out for a visit and a winter walk with my friend Sally once again.

The day was sunny, cold, and our walk was brisk as we checked up on her ducks and I took pictures of her pond in winter. Once back inside, we had a delightful lunch of soup and breadsticks with some cookies and grapes for dessert. Another great time, bundle up and come on along, Pictures are here.

February 4, 2007 - End of an Era...

carousel
I just happened to be looking through some of my pictures and came across this picture I had taken of the carousel at Rotterdam Square. The carousel was removed not too long ago and I for one will miss the bright colors and the lights. I guess all things such as these become too expensive to maintain and parts become hard to find. Too bad, - it was one of their attractions! So, I framed in the picture and added text, and here it is.

January 27, 2007 - Pyramid Lake in Winter...

On Sunday we left after breakfast to take a ride up to Pyramid Life Center to get some winter shots of the lake. We have not had a lot of snow this winter and Pyramid had only about 3 or 4 inches but it was a lovely (and cold - 7 degrees) day.

Come on along, Pictures are here.

January 27, 2007 - In a Cold Spell...

birds
It seems more like January lately, with cold temperatures and snow flurries. There is not a lot of snow around even still but the air is cold and crisp, getting to 0 or so the past couple of nights.

In the back yard the birds are steady guests at the feeders along with our resident squirrels. It is always nice to see all this life going on when the yard is barren. Nothing lifts your spirits like the antics of my little friends as they jockey for position. Spring is now officially about 2 months away - how time is flying! This picture was taken using digital zoom, which I don't normally use. But I wanted to stay in the sun room where I would not disturb these little ones.

January 21, 2007 - More like Winter...

It is more like winter - at least in terms of colder temperatures lately. We havent had much snow at all. Kind of challenging to come up with photo ops outdoors. The weather is calling for snow showers early this coming week. I guess I will see if anything accumulates!

For one born and raised in the great northeast, a winter without snow just doesnt SEEM right!

January 15, 2007 - On the Flip Side...

After 70 degree days we now had an ice storm. The bushes are bending with the weight of the stuff and some people have lost power. Talk about an about face! Obviously I still have some power and I wanted to get this page up before the colder air and wind come in. Ahhhh the Great Northeast. Always full of surprises. Pictures are here.

January 6, 2007 - A Most Unusual Day...

We had record setting temperatures today! This morning, I got some pictures of fog on an unfrozen river and people walking around enjoying the warmth. Tonight it is getting colder again, but come on and see what the day WAS like... pictures are here.

January 5, 2007 - A Winter Retreat...

I'm back! I just spent 3 nights at the Windmill, a hermitage on the grounds of the Dominican Retreat and Conference Center. It was a wonderful time of reflection, and getting my scattered notes in order for a presentation I am doing next month. Interested in seeing what the windmill looks like? Pictures are here.

January 2, 2007 - Coffee House Party...

Happy New Year! The pictures are up! Check them out here.
