December 31, 2008 -New Years Eve...

...and, it is snowing out.

Right now it is about 9:15 AM and we have a few inches on the ground and it is a heavy, steady snow. The good thing is, the snow should be past us in time to go to the New Years Evening of Reflection at the Retreat House. Since we stay over I am hoping things will be quiet in the morning. Unlike last year when a storm hit just before we left and I ended up sliding up over a snowbank while trying to make a turn. Seems that there was more ice under the snow that morning and tough to get a grab on.

Maybe I should have taken that as a sign of things to come in 2008! ***laughing***

It's a good old-fashioned winter out there and in these parts snow cover is really what we WERE used to years ago. And so, as I look outdoors and the snow is falling sideways because of the wind I will be using the pristine landscape as inspiration for my upcoming Winter presentation on the 11th. One quote I love to use is this one, that I will leave with you...

There is a privacy about it which no other season gives you.... In spring, summer and fall people sort of have an open season on each other; only in the winter, in the country, can you have longer, quiet stretches when you can savor belonging to yourself. ~Ruth Stout

Happy New Year.

December 27, 2008 -Post Christmas...

We are in that quiet time between Christmas and New Year's Day, and I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas holiday.

Our actual Christmas day was held on Christmas Eve day... my sister decided since the kids would be over it was a good time to have our family celebration. It was a rainy ride up and awfully foggy coming back, I got stuck in the snow trying to get up her driveway but once things settled down we had an enjoyable day. Little Carley was the highlight as only toddlers and children can be! We attended Christmas Eve Mass at 9 PM, had a couple of friends over for tea and raspberry coffeecake and got to bed around midnight. Christmas day itself was quietly spent at home. It did feel good to relax and I cooked a nice meal.

It is also a time for reflection...looking back on the past year and looking forward to a new one. An awful lot happened, I must say. I learned a lot, went through a lot and found that the 'stuff' of ordinary life is extraordinary in its own way. I am not sure how much I will get out this winter for photo ops but I've learned that too is OK. Little by little, strength comes back and day by day there are many blessings and wonderful things to be thankful for. And so, I look at my candles glowing in the windows and make my positive resolutions for the New Year. May your New Year be one of limitless possibilities as well.

December 22, 2008 -Aftermath...

It was another wild weather weekend, with the first day if Winter leaving us overall with almost a foot and a half of snow. Light and fluffy - and then the winds came up. Tonight, the winds have calmed down and it is COLD out. I am most grateful that we have heat this time. I took a few pictures around home of the ice storm last weekend, and the snow this past weekend and they can all be seen here.

Oh - Carol Night was canceled. It was quite messy out there. A good night to stay in and enjoy the snow.

A quick Note - the Pictoral Quote (see top bar) is our Christmas wish to you. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and healthy New Year!

December 20, 2008 -Weather Updates...

The promised storm came in at noon yesterday, and canceled most activities that were scheduled. We got about 6-7 inches by last night, and then it started snowing again so we ended up with 10+ inches of snow.

BUT...it gets better...

There is another storm warning for another 5-10 inches tomorrow. Looks like a white Christmas in store. I will get a page up with shots of last weekends ice and this weekends snow eventually. Oh, and with all this I got all my presents wrapped. Yay!

December 19, 2008 -Winter Storm Warning...

It looks like Christmas will be white! A storm is due in anywhere from mid morning to early afternoon. Have you noticed on the local forecasts they now say "several inches possible" rather than the old "5-10 inches of snow possible"? Anyway, the snow blower is gassed up and ready to go, and I will make sure the feeders are filled. I have a little more Christmas shopping to do. And I am wondering if Carol Night at the Retreat House will be canceled. The heaviest snow is due at the evening commute. Stay tuned for updates.

If we dont lose power again, that is!

December 14, 2008 -Did you hear the one about the ice storm?

Remember those few lazy flakes I wrote about on the 11th?

This was one heck of a weekend. Early evening brought sleet and freezing rain, which picked up in intensity. Working at the desk I listened to the weather outdoors, hoping that it wouldn't be too slippery for getting over to DRCC to work. Just as I was shutting down the computer, the power went out. Came back on long enough for me to reset all the digital things and went out again. And stayed out...from Thursday night until very late Sunday morning.

In the Capital District, we heard reports of 220,000 people without power. And we were among them. That also meant...no heat. A house can get pretty cold in sub-freezing temps for a couple of days.

So, all you could do was bundle up under the fleecy blankets and wait in the dark. Not enough light to read, and the shivering would shake the pages. Coffee was prepared by pouring boiling water (I have a gas stove and the top burners worked if you lit them) over the grounds...a little at a time...in the drip basket. By this morning, it was in the low 40's in the house. But the worst weather brings out the best in people...we had invitations to go find refuge from the Sisters, Dave and Eileen, and my friend Helen. Even the cat would be welcome at a couple of the places.

But, we stayed and just about the time I thought that I couldnt stand another cold day, our power came back on. It is funny how you just dont want to leave home, even at times like that.

My thanks to all of the linemen who restored power, and are still working to restore power. It also was a good meditation on how some people live ALL the time. And I know that our donations to the local shelters are worth their weight in gold. The past few days renewed my quest to remember how much simple things like a warm home mean. And I continue to be grateful for all the little things in life for they ARE the big things after all.

This year was a heck of a year, and this just seems like an appropos topper. 2008 - don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out...

December 11, 2008 -A little snow...

We are having a few lazy flakes outdoors this morning. Last night, the weather forecast was for a winter storm warning, this morning the alert is mostly SOME snow, sleet and icing. I suppose we will see what we end up with, that's usually the way things work around here! The snowblower fired right up - that is a very good sign.

Otherwise, I need to get some pictures from the Habitat dedication up and there is always plenty to do at this time of the year. Days like this are good for baking, finishing decorating, and then sitting back with a book while Mother Nature spreads her white coat over the landscape. Out in the backyard the feeders are busy and the bird bath heater keeps the water open for my feathered and furry visitors. Believe me - they take full advantage of the situation. We're adding water every day!

For now, I think I'll use up some of the apples and make apple crisp. Not high on the 'healthy' list but it is SO good!

December 6, 2008 -Girl's Night Out

image

It's a quiet Saturday night, and tomorrow we have a Habitat dedication to attend - 2 homes - and I am hoping the predicted snow and wind hold off. But on Thursday night, I got out for a little fun at Aunt Katie's Attic for Girl's Night Out.

The night was the usual blend of fun, food and a raffle to benefit Helping Paws Animal Rescue. There is always a lot to see at Katies, and she has a heart as big as her shop! So, come on along and enjoy:

Girl's Night Out pictures are here.

November 29, 2008 -Thanksgiving Weekend...

image

Thanksgiving is over and as you can see little Carley really enjoyed dessert! Takes after her great-aunt.

Now the work begins to prepare for Christmas... my handmade cards are actually finished and I have been busy packaging blank note cards to sell in a couple of local shops. I pulled out some garland that I will hang, and a string of lights in the sun room needs replacing. Time to check out cookie recipes and make turkey soup. Packages of sliced turkey are in the freezer - enough for a few more meals.

Outside, we have had a few intermittant snow flurries and I wonder if we will have a white Christmas. Simmering spices in the potpourri crock scent the house and everything is clean going into the season.

Thanksgiving itself was bittersweet - the joy of the holiday marred by the senseless violence in Mumbai. The best we can do is cultivate peace in our own lives...if everyone did that perhaps we would have more peace in the world itself. Especially approaching the season of 'peace on earth' we can certainly try.

November 24, 2008 -The Preparations Begin...

image

Little by little, room by room, the house is deep cleaned and things are organized for the upcoming holidays.

The turkeys are beginning their thawing process, I am making my lists and timetables. It is almost unbeliveable that the whole year has just about finished. This year, I will be especially thankful for everyone who stood by me during my cancer treatment, and I am VERY thankful that it is over! I am thankful for a warm house and the smell of pies cooking, clean rooms and fresh laundry, and especially those who bless my days with their presence. Meister Eckhart put it wonderfully...If the only prayer you said in your whole life was 'thank you', that would suffice.

Thank you. All of you. And have a Happy Thanksgiving!

November 20, 2008 -Happy Anniversary!

I'm a little slow getting pictures up as I recover from bronchitis. But I DID get over to the 60th Anniversary celebration at the Dominican Retreat and Conference Center (see sidebar for link under DRCC) and had a wonderful time. It was good to see the Sisters who used to work here, and came back for the jubilee. A very special place providing 'Solitude on a Busy Highway' - if you havent been there, it is worth looking into.

Come on along and check out the photos...they can be seen here: 60th Anniversary pictures

November 13, 2008 -Back from the woods...

image   image    image   image   image

I got back yesterday from a few days at Still Point.

The time spent in quiet is always refreshing, especially because things have been VERY busy lately. I got a chance to do some reading, writing and resting. Not a lot of pictures as the landscape is getting quite stark but I put a few above of the cabin itself. I enjoyed simple meals, some short walks, and the deep quiet amid the birds, squirrels and chipmunks. Some people like a bit of flash on their vacation, give me a cabin in the woods any day!

November 9, 2008 -Off on Retreat

I will be on my way for a private retreat very shortly. Things have been so busy that I need to recharge before we get into the holiday season. I am fortunate to have places like this to go...and the simplicity of my days on retreat helps to rejuvenate me.

I still need to learn how to pace myself, it is just so foreign to me after years of expending energy without thinking. Overall, I know I will have a lot of things on my 'thankful list' on Thanksgiving day. I know my quiet time the next few days will be reflecting on just that.

Plus, a few pictures on my return will be posted. Until then, peace.

November 6, 2008 -Almost the end of the week

And I just dont know where it went. There is a new Pictoral Quote up - see top bar. Otherwise, it has been busy. I have more scanning lined up for the weekend, then make a video for the Retreat House celebration. Time is FLYING...

November 4, 2008 -No matter which side you're on...

November 2, 2008 -Closing in on years' end

image

We are now getting closer to the time when all of the deciduous trees will be bare, and the season changes to winter. In the mornings, heavier frost dusts the grasses, the flowers are gone and the bird bath freezes over. Inside, I get the house ready for a long winters' rest. It is time for quilts and afghans, lots of pillows, hot tea and good books, good music...and of course, a curled-up cat! It dosn't get much better than that!

I have been working this weekend on scanning old pictures - a history of the Retreat House - for the upcoming 60th Anniversary celebration. That is 60 years of 'Solitude on a Busy Highway'...in my opinion more necessary than ever in this overbearing world. I hope to have pictures up after the event, and hope also to post a few of the old photos as well. The photo above is the old Retreat House when it was a private residence, and when the Windmill hermitage was a working windmill.

It is also time to start getting in my supplies for Thanksgiving dinner, and plan the day. My energy level is a little better than it was but I keep getting reminders that I have a long way to go. But, I am getting there!

October 28, 2008 -Winter Storm Warning

They are using the "s" word. This could get messy.

October 27, 2008 -More Pictures

Pictures are up for the Habitat for Humanity House Dedication and the Volunteer of the year awards. They can be seen here:

October 26, 2008 -Yet another busy weekend

The end of another busy weekend, and I have pictures to sort and put up from a Habitat for Humanity house dedication today. We also had our Parish Ziti dinner, I got a few pictures on the run as I was busy scooping zitis. Heavy rains were a good thing for our dinner, we had a typical nor'easter but with rain instead of snow. Perfect for a plate of comfort food.

But I did get a little time tonight to get the pages up for the fund raiser at the Dominican Retreat and Conference Center. Just click on the link below for some of the pictures:

More Than Just Desserts 2008

October 20, 2008 -Another busy weekend

The weather continues cool and sunny, we still had some color up in the Adirondacks for "Girl's Weekend" at Pyramid Lake. This is one weekend of plain fun as we hiked, some fished, and some sat lakeside in the sun. Evening brought a campfire and we made s'mores.

This morning I am home doing laundry and have even MORE pictures to sort through and make pages. I also attended "More Than Just Desserts" at the Retreat house last night, this being their big fund raiser with wonderful foods, many Silent Auction items and more. So, now I sit with the cat in my lap trying to catch up on a million things! So far, however, here are some of the pictures:

Pyramid Ladies Fall Weekend

October 13, 2008 -What a weekend!

image  image

It is Monday night of the Columbus Day weekend, and what a weekend it was.

I got out a few times since last Wednesday for pictures and this weekend, yesterday, we went up north to the Sacandaga River and then on up to Auger Falls. I was able to get in some hiking and in SOME spots, bushwhacking. I'm still on the slower side but it felt GOOD. Of course, I brought the camera. So, what that means is some new pictures will be posted. The weather was faultless - sunny deep blue skies, temperatures warm but not TOO warm, and although it was a little past peak the farther north we went it still was lovely.

Today, Monday, I led the Autumn day of retreat at the Dominican Retreat and Conference Center (link in sidebar under DRCC) from 10-3. Another wonderful group of retreatants and another day spent at one of my favorite places. Now to begin working on a retreat scheduled for January....

Check back - more fall pictures will be up soon.

October 7, 2008 -New Quote.

New Pictoral Quote is up -see top bar - a little Autumn image for you. We are having typical fall days - sunny then sudden rain showers. I'm getting the house ready for winter and working at the desk for an upcoming Autumn Presentation on Monday. Right now, the "office" is a little cluttered with books and papers, pine cones and paper leaves. Never a dull moment!

October 5, 2008 -Getting out there.

The colors are slowly creeping in, and I have been out to a couple of places the past week or so. And just to give you something new to look at...

Fall 2008 pictures are up!

More will be added as I get them - I'm supposed to head out to Pyramid Lake in a couple of weeks with 'the girls'. If there is still color up there, I will add those pictures too!

October 1, 2008 -Those lovely Fall days...

image

That picture was taken outside of the Windmill this past weekend...amid a flurry of bees among the asters, this swallowtail drifted in and didn't even mind my 'up close and personal' approach. All seasons are beautiful but I do have to admit that the colors beginning to show now and the late fall bloomers like asters and mums make each day a delight - even the cloudy ones.

I am hoping to get over to Still Point (or somewhere) today for a little while and catch some of the colors beginning to show up. I haven't been out there in awhile; sounds like an excellent idea! For the rest of you...Carpe Diem!

September 25, 2008 -Making a List...Checking it Twice

Is it almost Friday already? It was a busy week here and tonight I am getting things packed for a trip to the Windmill and giving a short presentation on Saturday. It is supposed to be rainy - no matter to me as it makes for a cozy time while I'm there. So right now, the laundry is going, I have to get packed and maybe get over to Aunt Katie's because it's Girls Night Out!

Dont want to run TOO much, though...it's too easy to get disorganized more than I am at the present time! Now, what was I doing?

September 21, 2008 -Autumn Rolls On In

It's the end of the weekend! Yesterday - for all of you folks familiar with the area and it's events - I remembered to get over to the Dutch Fair at the Reformed Church.

Now, it has been YEARS since I got over there and how things have changed! Craft vendors in tents, lots of "fair food" and their own section with the "white elephant" tables and clothing. I parked almost down to Mohawk Avenue and walked up. And I went as a spectator - forgot the camera and decided I would just enjoy the event. The weather was perfect - warm but not hot and blue skies. My purchases were a saucepan and lid and a saute pan, both heavy gauge stainless steel, in excellent condition and of course how could I leave without buying a maple sugar leaf?

Today, Sunday, was cooler and cloudy - perfect weather to trim the hedges that have been growing wild all summer. I also got more of the garden cleared up. Now, I am indoors getting ready for two classes I teach this week plus a small presentation on Saturday. I am hoping to be in the Windmill from Friday until Monday. So far, so good!

Some of the leaves are turning now - I am hoping for some bright colors this year!

September 16, 2008 -Getting my mojo back

I have been thinking a lot the past few days...looking back over the past months or actually the past year.

As I sit here at my desk and try to catch up on some things that fell behind, it is almost as if I don't know where to begin to 'catch up'. The period of time from April 10 until now went by in a blur...you get so busy fighting when you have cancer that your focus goes from day to day...not 'next week, next month'. And when the whole process of treatment is finally done you sit back and think 'WHEW...'

It is apparent that it will take time to get up to speed once again. Some days I feel like I played chicken with a freight train and lost. I have new scars that I didn't have before. But overall...the immense satisfaction in knowing that I faced one of my greatest fears - and won. Not without a lot of help, and a lot of prayers but a victory. Sweet victory. Now comes the task of building up this tired body with good nutrients, gradual exercise and keeping the faith. Not always easy, I will be the first to admit that I REALLY miss just dashing out the door with the camera and running all day. But most of it should come back. I'm one of the lucky ones.

I know that my entries have been a little shorter lately and I am hoping that the situation will change as I improve. As I get stronger and take on the world again.

As I get my mojo back!

September 14, 2008 -The dog days of September

Not a lot to write about - this weekend was hot and muggy. I think all of the southern heat and humidity is being pushed northward by the hurricanes. Out in the garden flowers are fading and going to seed yet the air feels like mid summer.

We did get to a cookout today for awhile - I think that was the highlight of the weekend! Tonight I am working on upcoming presentations...one in mid-October and a quick one in 2 weeks. I will hopefully get over to the Windmill for a few days right around that time.

September 10, 2008 -No Words Necessary...

September 8, 2008 -While the Iron is Hot

Yesterday dawned sunny, breezy and much cooler so - it was the perfect day to...

wash windows.

Yes, I really did that - I went out to the front porch and thought I would just neaten things a bit since we use the sun room in the back exclusively. Well, I ended up washing all the windows and sills (all 14 of them) and washed and rehung the half-curtains that give us privacy. Seeing as how I missed out on the Spring Cleaning this year, or most of it anyway, it was good to get things cleaned up and all day the breeze made the whole house smell like fresh linen.

Today is another sunny day so I might get the rest of the mums planted and perhaps a little more work. The rest of this week will be on the busy side so I think I will strike while the (so called) iron is hot.

Thank God the curtains did not need ironing!

September 6, 2008 -Bits of Hanna and other things

We have been having rain on and off since VERY early this morning. Effects from Hanna, bringing rain we DID need. This past week became hotter and more humid, and that always seems so odd when your thoughts are turning to Fall. I bought 10 mum plants, started taking out the old and tired impatiens and then it feels like the middle of summer again! No matter - there is a lot to be done and I am trying to get some of it out of the way. In my room here tonight I work on some pictures I took of those new mums and work as well on an Autumn presentation that is coming up in October. Wondering if we will have color, for some of the trees are dropping dry, brown leaves already. We shall see!

In other news, I have moments when my energy level seems to be getting better and then I need a nap again. But overall I am focusing on IMPROVEMENT, and I do believe I am seeing some. Little victories and new things to celebrate every day.

September 1, 2008 -End of the weekend.

Does anyone know where the summer went? Seems like it was just the beginning of spring and now the unofficial end of summer was this past weekend. The weather was grand, we went to a barbecue and I did a LOT of napping. All I needed was a good hammock.

We are due for a few really warm days now, and the past couple of weeks we haven't seen much rain - a big switch from most of the summer. School starts this week and with it, teaching at the community college. Pretty soon the leaves will turn (about a month away) and a group of us are already planning "Ladies Getaway" at Pyramid. I HOPE that I'll get plenty of great shots, last year the colors were spotty. But I'm beginning to put the mums out in pots, cleaning out the fading summer flowers, enjoying these last few weeks of cricket sounds at night. A few leaves have fallen here and there...and time marches on. Change is good.

By the way, there is a new Pictoral Quote up as well. (see top bar) Enjoy!

August 29, 2008 -A week at Pyramid Lake.

image  image  image

I finally got the pages made and pictures up for the Pyramid Lake retreat.

The pictures above are the cabin where I spent most of the week, and one by the waterfall which was outstanding this year. There was a noticible lack of mice and chippies and red squirrels this year - due to a busy mink who showed up last year. Otherwise, I did hear bats try to find an entrance to the cabin during the night and something small sounding that scratched at the door. The sounds of nature :) I have more pictures up at my site at Fotki - the link is on the first page (this is "people pictures" only at this point, so the participants can get a set). Enjoy!

August 25, 2008 -Back from the mountains.

I got back from Pyramid Lake around 11:30 this morning - after 2 wonderful retreats.

It was good to see the familiar faces once again, and meet some new people. This year was one of the biggest ever - I think there were around 47-48. I also had the great pleasure of meeting Dr. Harry Owens - a most amazing man who has served in Antarctica and Africa, to name a couple of places. Harry has to be one of the NICEST men I have ever met, I can see why people love him so much!

I had a chance to stay in one of the cabins in the woods (it can get COLD up there at night) and then moved to the lodge for the weekend to make room for a family to use the cabin. I hope to have pictures in a week or two - there are a lot to process and organize. I am home, exhausted but happy that I got there. I will write more later on some of the highlights. For now, off to bed...

August 15, 2008 -It won't be long now...

The presentations are just about wrapped up...I've made my lists for everything I need to bring...

And Sunday I head for the hills. Or rather, the mountains. It seems that suddenly, the time is here even though I have been thinking about it all along. All through the appointments, treatments, etc. Somewhere along the line I feel like the past 4 months slipped past and I sit here thinking "HUH?" But I look forward to seeing old friends and meet new ones, and just be IN the mountains once again. I dont know that I will have anything interesting to post between now and Sunday but I will have plenty on my return. Oh my, where IS my backpack....

August 14, 2008 -Graduation Day...

At long last, I am a free woman (sort of). My last apppointment at Riverview was this morning. My deepest appreciation to the staff for all of their excellent care and for putting up with some of my antics *grin*. A little humor goes a long way in cancer treatment, and they were 'up for the game'. For that I am grateful. I have a small page up of those people directly involved in my care - you can see pictures here.

Thanks - you are the best and to my readers, you are the best too. Remember to get your checkups...I want to keep you around!

August 12, 2008 -Sundaes on Sunday...

I got the pictures up from Sundaes on Sunday - you can see them here.

Enjoy!

August 9, 2008 -It's getting closer-...

Only a week from tomorrow and I will head up to the Adirondacks for the presentations. And most of all, the radiation will be OVER! It was extended to Thursday but the end is in sight.

What I can't get over is how this exposes you to a whole new world...one where you see many brave people dealing with cancer in any of it's forms. I admire also those people who work to help us beat the beast. Their dedication amazes me as well. While I hope I never have to do this again I am grateful for lessons learned on the way. You find out a lot about yourself at times like this. And you find out who your friends are, and meet new friends. It was a bump in the road but I am just about past it now. And confident that I will clear the 5 year mark, off in the future.

It's not to say that I dont get tired (I do) or that I am not sore (I am)...these are temporary situations that will fade away in time. The thing is to remember the lessons. At any rate, I have a bottle of wine in the fridge just waiting for Thursday. And a more normal routine may begin once again.

I am hoping that my entries are not boring you to tears but I felt this way; I write about the world around me and what is going on. And this is a part of my life. Not a picnic, but it could have been worse. After some rest to build back up again, I am making my plans into fall with more presentations and hopefully many more photo ops.

Thank you for hanging in here with me and look sometime soon for pictures of DRCC's 'Sundaes on Sunday' - the open house event happening tomorrow.

August 6, 2008 -Adirondack Chairs - Ballston Spa

They are up! Enjoy the Adirondack Chair exhibit.

August 5, 2008 -Looking Glass Pond

I got the pictures ready from Looking Glass Pond..hopefully the Adirondack Chairs will be done in a couple of days. In the meantime, enjoy the pond pictures.

Looking Glass Pond.

August 4, 2008 -Keep on keepin' on...

This past weekend, I was able to get out a bit, on Saturday another friend named Pat and I met for lunch and I took pictures of many of the Adirondack chairs that are around Ballston Spa. They have been painted by local groups and artists and are quite a sight to see. On Sunday, another friend Kathy introduced me to Looking Glass Pond in Schoharie County. I am hoping to have some pictures up soon of both.

In other news, I went to rad. today thinking 'I have only a week to go'. WRONG. I will not be finishing on the 11th but the 14th. The last week will be a more intensive dose in the actual tumor area just to make sure. So, I'll juggle a couple of things to fit my daily trip back into my schedule. I'm doing well all things considered and 'dealing with it'. Whenever I get tired and sore, I remember that it's all for the good.

They probably keep me coming back for the pictures and the tales! Yup, that's what I will say.

August 1, 2008 -An Amazing Journey

A quick note for now, today, I called the Canal System office and found that the kayaker Skip was still at Lock 9. So, I grabbed my camera and headed over. What an amazing story and what a NICE man - I took several pictures and then left him to pack up and head on down the river.

Pictures are here.

July 31, 2008 -The Last Day of July

And a new Pictoral Quote is up (see top bar). A cyber friend of me sent a link to a great page of quotations so I have a new and wonderful supply. The chicory flower in the picture was in a field today - amid Queen Annes Lace, pink clover, purple loosestrife and many other great wildflowers. I saw the field and made a quick stop for some pictures, naturally.

One interesting event this evening, my friend Pat and I went over to Lock 9 (about 5 miles from here) and were taking pictures of the lock and the river and while talking with the man who works the lock we met a man who is kayaking from Chicago to New York City to raise awareness for prostate cancer. He introduced himself as "Skip" and the whole concept fascinated me (You remember the previous entry about my nephew who walked across the country). I admire people who step out of the box - I dont know that I would have the courage to take on something like this but the story was amazing. And, it is just awareness he is kayaking for - not funds. So, that was a real highlight in addition to learning more about the lock system itself.

Link for Skip's web page... Paddle4Prostate.

July 27, 2008 -Pictures from the Lake

We had a wonderful trip to Pyramid Lake on Friday afternoon into Saturday. Terry picked me up around 10, we shot over for my rad. treatment and left from there for a day at our favorite lake. The weather was perfect and now I am marking time until my trip up in a few weeks to present at 2 retreats. And, it was a balm for the spirit as I watched the fish leap out of the water, sat with my feet in the lake, walked the well known and much loved paths. You can see some of the pictures here.

July 24, 2008 -Pictures, and a surprise

Finally I got a couple of pages of pictures of the Rose Garden. I went in early July with a friend of mine - Pat - and we had a grand time running amid the roses and taking pictures. So, you can see Rose Garden pictures here.

In other news, the rain finally let up and another friend of mine called this afternoon and asked if I would like to go to Pyramid Lake tomorrow for a quick overnight trip. Would I? I can't pack fast enough! I dont have rad. treatments on the weekend so this is perfect!

Thank you, Terry! I will see you all again on Saturday!

July 23, 2008 - Better Build an Ark

I dont know about the weather where some of you live but we have had a LOT of rain. The Rose of Sharon bush in the backyard is bending over with the weight of all the water and it seems it's so dark, and the rain pours down.

Right now at 5:30 PM I am watching an occasional soggy squirrel come to the feeder and I am battling to stay awake. It seems so much later than it is. Dont you wish you could send some of the excess to those people who are praying for a drop of water?

Meanwhile, I am working on my upcoming retreats (when I can stay focused) and getting some Rose Garden pictures ready for a new page. I also may put a page up of some pictures I took when I stopped in Alplaus on Sunday during the "Paddle for a Cure". I took a chance on a kayak, but didn't win, darn it! I might need it for the basement!

July 20, 2008 - Finally, new Pictures

Today was another warm and humid day. I toyed with the idea of driving up to Pyramid Lake but right now it may be a little too much for one day. Plus, you never know if huge thunderstorms will come by and I didn't feel like dealing with them. SOoooo...I stayed indoors, resized pictures and finally got some new pages up. I am SO proud of myself for actually finishing this LOL! Now to upload them to the server before we DO get a storm, it is getting dark out there! I will get new photos up of the Rose Garden shortly. Enjoy:

July 17, 2008 - Beauty all around

image

Yesterday, I got out TWICE for a brief photo op - once after rad. when I went to Indian Kill for a very brief photo safari and the second with my friend Pat to Riverside Park in the Stockade where we snapped a few sunset pictures. The picture above is one of those sunset pictures. I have a couple of great ones but darn - the power wires were in the picture also.

The morning excursion was really interesting in that I saw 2 blue herons BUT - also a juvenile green heron! All were quite a distance but I will post a picture of it plus some of the other pictures over the past few days sometime soon.

July 13, 2008 - Life Changes

It is Sunday night, and while many people start their regular Monday routine tomorrow for me lately it means back to the Cancer clinic for my daily rad. I used a picture I took of some 'ceiling art' in the room and added some text and put it into the pictoral quote section. I am working on staying light hearted as this body fights to repair itself and some wonderful people work to help as well.

I can't say enough good about the people at Riverview where I get my treatments. It takes some very special people to work in a field where day in and day out a steady stream of cancer patients walk. The treatment itself is down to a science..exact positioning, exact dosage. I have completed 9 treatments and have 21 more to go. The radiated area is getting a little sore but that is normal.

I do have to say though I have some very sleepy moments. I dont go out too often because I dont seem to know when they will hit. If they ever come up with an Olympic category for Napping I will take the Gold, I can tell you that. But the garden is opening, there are blooms and birds right here in my own yard to photograph and I'll get a page up on those. Tonight, it is raining which is bad news for the planned fireworks for the end of Canalfest. But darned if I dont hear them going off anyway! And, in looking forward, only 5 weeks until Pyramid Lake!

July 11, 2008 - When it's time to say goodbye...

We went to a wake this evening for a very good friend of ours who died on Monday.

Sometimes in life, you have the honor and pleasure to meet a one-of-a-kind individual and even better, become friends. Our friend was one of these people. Blessed with a dry sense of humor, always smiling and always with a good word for you, I think the mold was broken after he was created. He cared deeply and touched the lives of so many people - all of whom will miss him terribly.

He had been in failing health lately but even so he still radiated a dignity that illness could not destroy. I was able to spend time with him as he drew closer to death (as did many of his friends) and made sure to tell him just how very special he was...how much he was loved. He was not able to respond on the last day I saw him, but he WAS alert and aware. Weakness had robbed him of the strength to speak but looking into his eyes you could almost read his words there. It is never easy to say goodbye to someone who was an integral part of your life and the community but one quote I came across touched me and I share it with you:

Death is not extinguishing the light; it is putting out the lamp because the dawn has come. ~ Rabindranath Tagore

Rest in peace, dear one. You will always be in our hearts and prayers.

July 6, 2008 - I almost forgot...

Gardenlady celebrated it's 5th anniversary on July 4th!

I almost forgot to leave a note here - but remembered this evening as I sat to make an entry. I could not have foreseen 5 years ago that I would still be posting here, so much has changed and evolved. But it is still a pleasure to keep up the pages, to hear from people from all over...what started out as almost a whim has become a part of my life.

I hope all of you had a great holiday weekend and a safe one. Mine was quiet but I did get out to the rose garden with a friend of mine Thursday night. We had a great time, watched the darkening sky and came back home in quite the rainstorm. On the 4th itself, hubby and I went to Yaddo, then a quick stop at Round Lake Village and a late lunch or early dinner and back home. Nothing real fancy, I am not quite up to anything fancy! But it did feel very good to get out for a while. I will post some pictures sometime this week I hope. Tonight we went out for dinner with my nephew, his wife and the 'baby' - now over a year old. And we tried our hand with their Wii at the house. I REALLY stink at it!

I will catch up more later on.

July 1, 2008 - Settling in

As we move toward the 4th of July weekend I've been trying to get some of my yard in order. With all that has gone on, I have not been as attentive as I should and when you add rain and warm temperatures in, you get a jungle. But some trimming has been done and little by little some more order comes in.

I started radiation therapy on June 30, it will be part of every weekday until August 11 or 12. The people that take care of me are wonderful and the place is outside of the city so it is a nice ride. Tonight I'm tired, not because of the treatment itself because it is too early for that but I believe everything caught up with me. I slept on and off all day.

Life is a journey, and in each of our lives the road can get rough. Going into the center every day I see a lot of people who fight all kinds of battles but I also see a great deal of bravery in the face of adversity. None of us chose this, but you learn to fight it. Living becomes more precious as your priorities change and you REALLY see what is important. The faces of family and friends, the color of a sunset, flowers in the garden. At times I wish I were miles past all of this but for now it remains the goal I work toward. I have had to slow down, perhaps this will be the summer I laze around (not in the sun) and look to the future.

June 24, 2008 - Garden Tour!

Pictures are up! My 'labor of love' is finally complete and all of the gardens are ready for viewing. If you made it to the tour, you can relive the memories of strolling through the gardens. If you couldn't make it, well, enjoy the pictures!

The tour starts here

June 22, 2008 - End of the Weekend

It is a quiet Sunday evening...finally, after some absolute downpours off and on today. I heard on the weather that there was a tornado not all that far from here. You could tell that someone was getting hammered by the sound of the thunder and the black skies.

Yesterday, however, was the Garden Tour and aside from it being quite warm you couldnt have asked for a better day. I finished up the gardens yesterday, went back to a couple of them for some additional shots and now have all the photos in folders here. Now comes the job of choosing about 8 pictures of each garden and making the pages, then linking the whole thing together. It is a tough choice, picking 8 for each garden that I feel captures it's essence best. Tough job, but someone has to do it *grin*. It will be a few days yet before they are ready - I post the whole thing at once - so stay tuned.

And to the gardeners, my thanks for your gracious hospitality. You have done quite a job with your personal Edens and it shows! I also thank the Soroptimists for allowing me to have SO much fun! I thoroughly enjoy being a part of the tour in this way.

June 18, 2008 - Gardens and more

image

I've been getting to a garden-a-day this week. With the tour on Saturday, I don't want to miss any of the eight on the program. Getting out early saves energy (my own, not the car) and assures each garden will get the attention it deserves. This years offerings are spectacular...all pictures will be posted some time AFTER the tour. Be sure to check back, these are beauties!

In other news, tomorrow I head over to 'Local Cancer Center' to have my comprehensive consult with radiology. I would imagine I start next week or the week after, we will see. It's all timing now, folks... Pyramid is only 2 months away! Tonight there was a beautiful rainbow and I was on the road sans camera. DARN! And the fireflies are out, have you noticed?

By the way, that's my garden up above!

June 15, 2008 - Catching up

I got a new pictoral quote (see top bar) up finally, and will soon have links for some great outdoor shots from the Mill Stone and later, the Garden Tour. It's been pouring at times, hopefully the gardens will not be ponds by Saturday.

June 14, 2008 - Secret Gardens

Hooray - I DID get out today for a couple of hours to the Stockade Secret Garden tour. I wasn't sure I would make it but I did, and got to most of the 13 gardens listed.

The weather was hot and humid, and I had to cut the photo op short due to an incoming storm. But I was amazed as always at these gems tucked behind the grand old homes in this fabulous section of the city. From tiny gardens to surprisingly large gardens - the whole program was a delight from start to finish. I have picture link below...and am getting ready for the next Garden Tour coming up next weekend!

June 13, 2008 - Catch Up

After a somewhat busy week (not that it was busy normally but for me lately, it was BUSY) I sat down tonight and caught up on some more pictures, one of our family picnic that I mentioned earlier featuring my nephew who just returned from his run across the lower half of the U.S., and an event that slipped past me in the activities of late.

You can see the latest pictures by following the links:

This weekend is the Stockade Secret Garden Tour, I don't know if I will be up to it but I will try. Next weekend is the Soroptimist Gardens and Gazebos Tour, which I am making my photo appointments now for those pictures.

June 8, 2008 - Sunday morning

image

How do you like my new bracelet? This morning, there just happened to be a pancake breakfast at the Parish Center that was put on by Relay for Life. Talk about timing. I have attended many fund raisers in my day and it is odd to know how personal it has become. So, we went and had breakfast with our friends, then I came home and I am staying out of the heat and humidity until we head out later to my nephews. Another nephew just finished a cross country run- literally cross country from the Atlantic Ocean in Georgia to the Pacific Ocean in California. The trip took 4 months. Their (he and 3 of his friends) journey can be seen at Nation Run 2008. More later on that!

By the way, next week is the Stockade Secret Garden Tour (I HOPE to get to that if I can) and the week after is the Soroptimist Gardens and Gazebos tour! I do hope it cools down a bit.

June 5, 2008 - How Does Your Garden Grow?

You just know I have to be taking pictures of something.

Seeing as the woods and trails are safe from me for a little bit, I decided to go out into the yard and get some pictures of what is blooming now. We are at the point where all the trees and bushes are full and we have privacy (hooray!). But don't let that stop you from coming in for a peek ...pictures are here.

June 3, 2008 - Angels Among Us

image

The picture above is a gift brought over to me today by a friend who learned of my challenges last night.

Her gift, a handmade fleece throw with 2 pillows, wrapped in a cello bag and tied with pink and white ribbons and flowers tied in was so thoughtful, and came on a day when pain and fatigue were a little more evident than usual. And her gift reminded me of the gifts of others who came to help. Naomi with the blanket, Marlene with the rides to the hospital for both procedures, Eileen and Dave for all their support, Shirl and John for a healing card and a plant...the list goes on and on encompassing all those who sent prayers, food, cards, you name it. Little things done in great ways. They all show that angels walk among us. They dont have wings and halos, but are in the people who touch our lives every day. May God bless all of you.

I don't mean to be talking all the time about this very personal part of my life but I do think they should be mentioned. They are part of the 'everyday miracles' that I talk about and present each and every day. May you all be blessed in realizing the miracles in YOUR lives too.

June 1, 2008 - Armchair travels

I'm a little more alert, still sleeping more than I would like however and already missing the woods so I decided to put together a page of some of this spring's blooms. The variety of plant life is just amazing to me, and each picture brought back memories of every place I went. I did get out a couple of times...to church and to a garden center long enough to get a couple of hanging baskets for the garden bench. It is a beautiful time of year, come on along and enjoy Spring flower extravaganza 2008!

May 29, 2008 - Back home again

I am home and doing a lot of sleeping presently. My surgery was yesterday - I had the lumpectomy and the sentinel node procedure in which the first (sentinel) lymph node was removed The news is, if cancer doesn't show up in the sentinel node, you're over 99% clear of cancer in those areas. And I am clear. So, my surgeon did a great job the first time in removing then what was suspicious in the biopsy at the beginning of May. Next I go to the oncologist in a couple of weeks followed by radiation treatment about a month from now. While my activities may be curtailed a bit as of now, I should be back on schedule to present at Pyramid in August.

It is a long road for sure but much better than it could have been. I am looking forward to complete recovery and more pictures. Many thanks to all who sent their well wishes and prayers - as you can see they are working. I've had to drop a couple of things from my schdule for the near future but I'm also plotting out my next hike and photo safari in due time. I do have more pictures that I took over the weekend and will get a page together when I am a little more alert.

May 25, 2008 - A Walk in the Woods

Another 'walk in the woods' day - a day to get away and forget about the cares of the world. I went to Milton where I visited Woods Hollow Preserve, a wonderfully maintained park in the town. Actually, I went on Saturday AND Sunday, taking in all of the trails. It's an easy hike and there is a lot to see. Come on along and join me....

Pictures are here.

May 21, 2008 - Day trips and updates

Today was a self-declared 'mental health day' and I took off in the car to Saratoga to visit Yaddo. I have heard about it but had never been there. The weather was nice, the showers forecast did not come in until after I left. The gardens were not totally ready yet - meaning sculptures in the rose gardens were still covered and fountains were dry. There was construction going on at the pergola. But the woodland flowers abounded in the rock garden. I will have to get back there in June.

Back there meaning after a little more surgery and before radiation treatments. I was VERY fortunate in that I do not need chemo. More surgery, radiation and the now-normal course of drug therapy after for 5 years. But I will be fine. It has been said that everything in life can be a learning and growing experience. While I would just as soon not have to go this particular route, it is the road that is there. So, you take it and learn how best to make it an interesting trip.

Pictures of Yaddo are here.

May 18, 2008 - Sunday Night

It is the end of a busy weekend, on Saturday I had my presentation 'Heaven and Nature' at the Dominican Retreat and Conference Center where we were blessed with a beautiful, sunny day. I met some wonderful new people and greeted some old friends as well.

Today, we went to a dedication ceremony for Habitat for Humanity's latest project. We had some showers so the ceremony was moved indoors but it did not dampen the spirits of all those in attendance. As a matter of fact, it was pretty crowded indoors. Getting pictures was a challenge. These events are always happy ones as the families who work so hard with the volunteers enjoy their own special day. This project had a great assist from Union College who not only donated the property but was key in providing assistance in all ways.

It was a great weekend!

May 13, 2008 - Buried!

Wow, do I have some pictures to get into pages and up on the site. My great-nieces first birthday, a day trip to Jackson's Garden at Union College and a few pictures from a drive up north on Sunday. Oh, and the black flies are out.

I have a few things to finish first, and I have a retreat day to lead on Saturday which needs its million revisions before takeoff so hopefully I can get the pages 'written', photos resized and catch up. Life is never boring *smile*

May 8, 2008 - Soapbox time...

Every now and then (like every couple of years) something comes along that has me step out of my usual format to deliver a bit of a message that I think is important. And now is one of those times. As the Gardenlady I dont go into detail about my personal life, as most people dont need to be bored with that stuff. But I will step up now and speak mostly to my women friends and readers, bringing an important message that I know you have heard over and over, ad naseum.

Get a routine mammogram.

I had my routine one last month, and had the normal "I'd like to be anywhere but here" feeling about it. And today, I am sitting here after a biopsy on Monday and getting ready to step into a world that until now I have been blessed to take a miss on. But, I am lucky - the cancer they found is very small, very early, and I'm ready to kick butt against an enemy I never thought I would have to deal with.

You find out, when something like this happens, that you have a lot of friends, and a lot of support. But please, PLEASE, dont think that you are too busy for a test, dont think it will never happen to you. Be blessed, like I feel I am, to find it before you can feel it and then put on your boxing gloves.

Lecture over...we resume our regular programming.

May 6, 2008 - A New Quote...

I put up the newest pictoral quote with thanks for THIS quote from an online friend. She sent it to me a couple of weeks ago and it's just perfect. The link is on the top bar as Pictoral Quote. And, many thanks my friend - you brighten my life!

May 1, 2008 - Tulips galore...

I got a page up with shots from Washington Park yesterday - some and enjoy the beautiful tulip gardens! Pictures are here.

May 1, 2008 - Tulip time

image

Oh..one more entry! I had personal business in Albany today, and finished up a little ahead of time.

Since it was such a nice day, and I was only a few blocks from Washington Park we decided to stop by and see the tulips before the mob arrives for the Tulip Festival. I will have a page up soon but decided to put a 'teaser' here on the main page. Stay tuned! And, by the way a reporter from the Times Union was on hand speaking with people, myself being one of them. I mentioned the web page so now I know I will need to get some of the sights from the park up for all to enjoy. People were wandering, taking pictures and enjoying a perfect day and the beautiful flowers. If you get a chance to get over there, do it, do it, DO IT!

May 1, 2008 - Fool the eye

image

Driving into work on Tuesday, I took a country road and passed by this pond. Wow, I thought...swans! So, being the always prepared photographer, I took a couple of pictures. I looked when I got home. On closer examination, I was fooled! They are apparently a very good (and free-floating) imitation or they have their heads stuck in one position. It makes for a very lovely scene as you drive along, though.

April 27, 2008 - More, more, more...

Pictures are ready, I caught up with most that I had to do. There are a couple more pages coming - be sure to stay tuned! Also, information on the 2008 Garden Tour can be seen by clicking the icon in the sidebar.

April 21, 2008 - Back from Retreat...

I am back from a weekend at the windmill, where I had a wonderful weekend enjoying seeing spring pop out all over, giving a short presentation on Saturday to a lovely group of women, and getting out for some pictures! I will have some pages up soon I hope, some of local preserves and a separate page on Lock 7 of the Erie Canal. My week this week will be a busy one and I will try to get those pages topgether as soon as I can!

And by the way, Happy Earth Day to you!

April 17, 2008 - Concert Pictures are up...

Pictures of the Mark Rust concert are finally up. You can see them here.

Next I hope to get a few pictures up of Christman Sanctuary, where I went yesterday. In a few days though, I'll be away over the weekend.

April 13, 2008 - A delightful evening...

image

What a treat tonight - taking pictures at a Mark Rust 'Coffeehouse' concert at the Dominican Retreat and Conference Center.

I should have pictures of the event up soon but I am posting this one picture for now. His style is delightful, his songs are original and he draws the audience into his performance. A GREAT evening!

April 9, 2008 - Spring cleanup

We had an absolutely beautiful day yesterday so I cleaned out the garden and washed ALL fourteen windows on the front porch. Inside and out.

The garden now looks more like spring. In the fall, I leave most of the perennials so they will make seeds for the birds through the winter. Then in the spring I cut everything back and let all the new growth emerge. We are due for a few days of April showers and that will really get things growing. The grass is greening up, the birds sing and you get that feeling once again that

The world's favorite season is the spring. All things seem possible in May ~ Edwin Way Teale.

Otherwise, I took some pictures on Tuesday at the Coffee Planet in Ballston Spa - look for them and more pictures of the downtown area soon.

April 6, 2008 - Finally!

I have a couple of picture pages. It's been awhile, hasn't it.

My health and other things have been less-than-desireable but we are improving over here. So, I got out and have pictures of Habitat's latest house, and Aunt Katie's 13 Annual Open House. Hey - it's a start! Links are:

April 4, 2008 - A rainy Friday...

Last week we had snow, today it is rain. But all around you can see the hint of green in the grass. Spring is slowly making headway.

This weekend is supposed to be clearing and nice. Perhaps I can get out into the yard to work, maybe I can get some pictures up of one of the latest habitat projects, or maybe I can get some more spring cleaning done. In any case there is always plenty to do. And the approach of nice weather is like the topping on the cake. And, I DO want to get out and get some pictures. It's been a LONG time!

March 30, 2008 - Almost....April?

image

Instead of flowers, on Friday we woke up to this.

Now, I know that snow is what my dad used to call the 'poor mans fertilizer' but this is getting old right about now. But, it WAS pretty. This was one of the houses I pass as I go to work at DRCC. The rest of the weekend was chilly, sunny, and the snow melted from the road but is still in the lawn areas. And tomorrow is supposed to be pretty sloppy in the morning, then warm up and rain. You can't say life isn't interesting.

March 28, 2008 - Surprise...

I read the weather forecast last night, and they DID say we would get snow.

I was awake until almost 2:30 and saw only rain but sometime between 2:30 and 6AM, we did get snow. Three inches to my best guess as it was wet and packed down. Everywhere but the top of the bird feeder so that is where my estimate comes from. I had a few things I had to do so I was not able to get pictures of the customers at Jumpin' Jacks standing amid the snowpiles on the day after opening day. I CAN tell you that things were hopping there when I drove by late yesterday afternoon.

The yard is white again but it sure was a beautiful sight this morning. I don't think we will be doing any yard work this weekend though.

March 23, 2008 - Easter Sunday...

image

Enough said....Happy Easter!

March 19, 2008 - Approaching Easter...

image

It is a rainy day, on the cold side - and things are pretty drab outdoors. This is the time of year when anything can happen weather-wise. And this weekend is Easter, about as early as Easter can be.

Later on, I and a couple of other people will go over to the church and set the chapel and the church up for Holy Thursday. The chapel itself will be decorated with flowers that will be moved out into the Church itself on Saturday morning. It is the end of Lent, the beginning of the Easter Triduum. The Easter Vigil on Saturday is my favorite Liturgy of the whole year - lengthy and lovely in all of its symbolism. I am so pleased to be able to help in a small way to get things set up for it.

March 17, 2008 - Happy St. Patrick's Day!

image image image image image image image image image image

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

March 12, 2008 - Knick Knack?

image

I got a new desk a couple of weeks ago. It has bookshelves. You can see the rest of the story....

March 11, 2008 - Little Signs of Spring...

While people look for robins, there are a couple of distinct signs of spring here. One sign is the flock of red-wing blackbirds that hang around my yard even though the lake is a mile away. Their clamor raises quite a din in the morning! I do love the sound of them, and they seem to find plenty to eat around here for now.

And the second sign? Anyone from the area knows that the opening sign at Jumpin' Jack's is a sure sign of spring. They open in two weeks....are you ready?

March 6, 2008 - More catching up...

I noticed that it had been a little longer than usual for a new Pictoral Quote to appear. So, on the top bar you can see a new one once again.

Today was a nice day, another busy one for me but at least things are being accomplished. The weather was pretty nice too, in the 40's and that should all change once again this weekend. But that is OK - I plan to get a little catch up rest on Saturday and meet my friend Pat on Sunday. It's been awhile!

March 5, 2008 - Rain and More Rain...

We may not have gotten the snow that was predicted Friday but are we ever getting rain. The end of my driveway and my side lawn look like lakes, and up the street, the puddles cover the road. The river is being watched and it's March in my little village.

In other news, I attended a dedication ceremont at Schenectady County Community College for Angelo Mazzone, owner of The Glen Sanders Mansion. Angelo was a graduate of SCCC and is a successful businessman in the area and the college dedicated one of the kitchens in the new culinary wing to him.

I can say it was a worthy cause and I am privileged to have been the photographer. Pictures will NOT be posted here as there are too many people involved but rest assured, the event was first class.

March 1, 2008 - Yeah, yeah, I know (smile)...

You have waited so patiently and finally, the Girls Night Out pictures at Aunt Katies are here. I am almost embarassed to put the up, my lack of practice shows...but you will still get a good idea of the fun time that we all had.

Pictures are here!

March 1, 2008 - In Like a Lion...

Our predicted "heavy snow warning" fizzled out - we got perhaps 3-4 inches of snow from the storm last night into today. So, tonight the wind howls outside and March makes it's arrival. To me, March is that turning point when I start to look for signs of spring. Of course, around these parts spring will not allow itself to be showing up when *I* expect it. So where most people get February blahs, I get them in March.

There is a fair snow cover in the yard and the weather changes more often than I can change my mind. A teasing, fickle season that gives you a balmy morning and blowing snow by nightfall. Windows are in need of washing and I itch to smell the sweet scent of spring soil. All in good time.

Hal Borland puts it best when he says 'No winter lasts forever, no spring skips it's turn. April is a promise that May is bound to keep, and we know it'. So, I brew another cup of tea and wait.

February 26, 2008 - How about some snow?

image

A quick look out the front door about 9 PM. Pretty, isnt it?

February 25, 2008 - Spring is Coming....

Some people look for robins - for me, it is adding the link for the Gardens and Gazebos Tour on the sidebar!

The link is not yet active as it is too early for information but, it is a start. Meanwhile, I have been cleaning out my 'office' and doing some things around the house. We are due for some cold weather the next few days, so I am dreaming about gardens and flowers. How about you?

I am also way overdue on pictures of Aunt Katies Girls' Night out. It's been so busy my head is spinning! Hang in there - they are coming :)

February 21, 2008 - Total Eclipse....

image

Just in case it was cloudy by you, here it was crystal clear and COLD!

February 19, 2008 - Fickle Weather....

image   image

We seem to be jumping around in the weather department - from ice to cold to 50 and fog yesterday to snow today. I will be heading out to Ballston Spa today instead of tomorrow - with a presentation I am giving tomorrow evening it would be cutting things just a little too close.

I can see the red buds on the maples become more pronounced as we get closer to spring, which is only a calendar month away. In the great Northeast however, that can be debatable. My favorite quote on this thought comes from Henry VanDyke:

'The first day of spring is one thing, and the first spring day is another. The difference between them is sometimes as great as a month'.

February 13, 2008 - Valentine's Day Eve....

I want to wish all of you a Happy Valentine's Day!

I know it's early but not really THAT early. As I sit here today I think of how we had a blizzard last year on V-Day. This year we have some ice and damp cold weather after a couple of inches of snow last night. The branches are iced over again and I have to go out and refill the bird feeders. We will be going out for dinner at some point, but we try to avoid the crowds on the day itself. I believe we will be heading to Outback...I haven't had a steak in ages and I am really looking forward to that. Oh, and their cheesecake too *grin*

I did get to 'Girls Night Out' at Aunt Katies last week but I have been SO busy I havent had a chance to get them sorted, resized and made into a page yet. Hopefully soon...after a nap!

Have a great one!

February 6, 2008 - Keeping Busy....

It is a cold, rainy, slippery night outside. A perfect night to be working INSIDE. My printer is busy churning out cards for DRCC's 60th Anniversary year. They are just some note cards to be used as fund raisers in the gift shop.

Outside, winter is being winter - no snow yet but some is due. We were out earlier and the rain was freezing on the car, the porch, but luckily it hadn't frozen on the roads as of then. I dont think I would want to be out there now. Times like this it is SO nice to enjoy a warm house.

There is a lot to be thankful for.

February 3, 2008 - Game Day etc....

For Super Bowl fans, today is the BIG DAY. And my little great-niece is all ready. Although it looks more like she would be saying 'Go Sox'. (Sorry - couldn't resist)

It has been decent weekend after a mix of winter precipitation on Friday. I have been working on things for upcoming presentations and last night was our parish potluck dinner "Cabin Fever". We had a smaller group than past years but there was still a great variety of foods and it was nice to sit and visit with friends. I did not take pictures (for once) - I took a night off!

So now, I have some work at my desk today mapping out the weeks' activity. I have 2 more presentations to add to my calendar and confirmed my retreat presentations this year at Pyramid. Time flies.

January 27, 2008 - The Katbird Shop...

Looking for a place to get a unique gift? Check out the Katbird Shop. I stopped in yesterday to drop off some Valentine's Day cards and caught up with Kathy and her cats! You can see pictures of the shop here.

January 25, 2008 - Back from Retreat...

I just spent 3 days at Still Point Retreat Center on a solitary winter retreat. I have never spent time there in the winter months and it was a beautiful experience. The silence was so deep - no unnecessary noise and the hermitage was more than cozy. Come on along for a look - no snow to speak of but a beauty all it's own.

Winter Retreat pictures are here.

January 20, 2008 - Quiet Sunday...

The temperature reads 19 degrees but somehow it seems much colder than that. I am doing a little reading, a little writing, and thinking of how cold my feet are!

We are supposed to have a few snow showers during the week and I am making plans to spend a couple of days in the woods. I've had some busy times lately and my schedule looms large ahead of me so it is time to get my thoughts in order. Outside the sunroom this morning, as hubby was sitting reading a movement caught his attention. A hawk - as he put it - "drifted down and landed on the yews for about 3 seconds, then took off again". Not enough time to call to me or do much more than take in that marvel. I AM happy there were no meal possibilities at the feeders at the time. The only disadvantage to having feeders is that sometimes your 'guests' may be victims. The way of nature. For today, the yard was safe.

In the top bar, I posted a new pictoral quote. I'm trying to keep up a little bit better in that department.

January 17, 2008 - Colder weather...

It's a damp and cold night out there, and some snow is in the forecast. During the past week we had some snow off and on, enough to cover the dirty snow and cling to the trees and bushes for awhile. No wind. So everything seemed sparkling and clean. This weekend the snow showers are supposed to continue with wind due for Sunday. I am happy the weather held out for the presentation - that's for sure. Tonight I am getting some home things done, catching up on correspondence and feeling thankful for a warm house, hot tea and a good book.

While we were out shopping today I got a new pair of boots (for winter/spring hiking) to replace my 'ducks' which decided that I have given them enough stress. I look for boots that you can walk through shallow icy water in and did find them. Now to get all better and get OUT there and take pictures. Geez - I'm missing my woods!

January 13, 2008 - Another notch in the belt...

I finished up another presentation today at the Dominican Retreat and Conference Center entitled 'Snow Day'. Fortunately, the expected snow held off and you could not have asked for better weather for the participants to travel. It was a small but great group with a couple of new faces and some delightful surprises.

During my presentations and retreats, I focus also on the work that the people themselves do. It is amazing the talent that is out there. The retreat was focusing on keeping our creative fires burning in the middle of winter. I thank the Sisters (as always) for all their help and support and I thank all of those who come to these presentations and make them what they are. Oh - and we have a new chef who did a fabulous job feeding us!

Now to work on the next and upcoming presentation I will be giving during Lent at one of the local churches. Life is full of surprises!

January 9, 2008 - New Years thought...

I got my quote on the Pictoral Quote page (see top bar for link). Needless to say, I did not resolve to procrastinate less...

January 5, 2008 - A Few Pictures...

I did manage to get some shots together from the past couple of weeks. Although we have had some wonderful snowfalls, I am still working to get my energy levels back up enough to get to my favorite places so things are kind of slow. I got a new camera - the Olympus SP550UZ to replace the Lumix, which took a spill and hasn't been the same. It's good to have a good point-and-shoot as well as the dslr.

At any rate - finally - Christmas, New Year's and winter pictures are here.

January 4, 2008 - A Brand New Year...

I hope you all had a safe and happy New Year.

We had a nice one at DRCC and the weather stayed good for those traveling and not staying the night as we did. We had some heavy snow in the morning which totalled out to maybe 3-4 inches if that. Hey - that was 3 days ago - I forgot! I can't forget the cold that came in behind it though. Wednesday night went down to around 0 and last night, the last I looked it was 2 below. This morning however it was 8 degrees, and it went up into the 20's. Felt like a heat wave.

I have not forgotten about putting up pictures, I just have not managed my time all that well this week. Maybe this weekend...
