Garden Tour - The Central Park Rose Garden
The Central Park Rose Garden, began 1959, grew to be a favorite city landmark
enjoyed by all visitors. But because of it's unique status as a public rose garden in a city park, the
garden suffered from budget cuts and lack of maintenance in the early 1990's.
In 1995, local citizens came to the garden's rescue and formed the Rose Garden Restoration
Committee - a non-profit organization - that has cared for the garden ever since. Today the garden
flourishes with over 4000 bushes, of every kind, colr and hue. The garden is also an All America
Rose Selection (AARS) test display garden, one of eight in New York State, which
entitles it to display rose varities prior to being sold commercially.
The RGRC is currently
in the midst of improving the garden through a prepared Master Plan. Recent additions include new pavers, benches,
a spring pond and perennial garden. New features yet to be constructed will
be a grand staircase, gate house, fountain and pergola.
